Garth Gourley is a saxophonist currently based in Port Townsend, Washington. He has performed professionally with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, Roanoke Jazz Orchestra, and numerous other groups from Virginia and Colorado. He has shared the stage with many musicians both as a professional musician and as a student. Garth holds degrees from James Madison University (BM - Music Education ’04) and the University of Northern Colorado (MM - Jazz Studies ’07). While at UNC Garth performed in the UNC Jazz Lab Band I, a group that earned several awards from DownBeat Magazine during his two year stay, and taught Jazz Combo VII and Vocal Jazz Ensemble II. Garth has studied saxophone with David Pope, Jeff Decker, and Andrew Dahlke. He has studied jazz music under Chuck Dotas, David Caffey, Dana Landry, Andy Connell, and many others.
The tracks above were recorded May 14, 2007 in Studio A at the University of Northern Colorado with Greg Heimbecker as the studio engineer. "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Paint by Numbers" are both by Garth Gourley. "26-2" and "Beatrice" are by John Coltrane and Sam Rivers, respectively. Personnel on the recordings include Sam Stewart on drums, Scotty Kruser on guitar, and Stephen Harms on bass.
