David Pope has served as James Madison University's saxophone professor since 2000. He is highly trained in classical and jazz saxophone performance, and is regarded as an authority on saxophone multiphonics (producing multiple tones simultaneously). In 1994, David was recognized by Down Beat magazine as the outstanding collegiate jazz soloist in the United States. He has recorded for Open Loop Records and has publications available from Hal Leonard and Dorn Publications. His column in Saxophone Journal is read around the world.David is in demand as a clinician, performing at universities and conferences throughout the country. As a member of the Pioneer Saxophone Quartet, he performs regularly with his mentor, Lynn Klock, and fellow UMASS alumni Angela Space and George Weremchuk. He has appeared at the White Nights Festival (Russia), the New England Saxophone Symposium, College Band Directors National Association, and with artists as varied as Lou Rawls, Ashish Khan, and the Florida Philharmonic.David lives in Virginia with his wife Jennifer and their two children, Noah and Maya. He endorses Applied Microphone Technology and plays the Keilwerth SX90 tenor saxophone.
