My dance name is Saiedeh, my awesome task is to create great dancers...I teach belly dance but I'm kinda rebellious...I feel an obligation to create new and exciting choreographies, always being mindful of the roots of belly dance but I can't help but add in all of my past dance training in ballet, jazz, theater dance, Polynesian and even tap dancing...you gotta have the rhythm. I call myself a rule breaker...I don't break classical dance rules, but I stretch belly dance to the fullest I can. It is such a beautiful art form, I always felt it needed a theme, something to bring out the emotions of the dancers then of course, the audience. This is what I teach from day one in the studio...It's a performance art and I like to bring that out of it. I started belly dancing 12 years ago when I moved from San Diego to Benicia. As I went along, I realized it was the perfect blending of everything I already knew...the main difference is that belly dancing comes not only from extreme body control and muscular development but the best dancers dance from the soul...I am so happy that I stuck with it, I feel so good about where I am right now.
My dance and business partner Yasmine, who is a very talented belly dancer and instructor, and I have a beautiful studio in Benicia's Arsenal area, teaming with artists of all types and that is so inspiring. We have a very talented dance company and I enjoy working with them so much...it is so satisfying to teach avid dancers...We also have new students coming in, I really enjoy teaching the beginning level classes as much as the advanced...it's so exciting to see the dancers develop...each lesson is fun but boy do we work hard.
In addition to Yasmine and I, we also have brought on our long time student Zyphire who teaches her own style of Progressive Tribal/Fusion. She is very creative and a wonderful performer...the next generation of belly dance instructors.
Recently we started an apprentice program to teach our top level ladies to teach! It is so great to know that we are preparing for the future. Yasmine's TAs are Simone, who comes from a variety of different dance styles and experiences including Magician's Assistant in Chicago, and Almaza, who has been dancing since childhood...both long time SIS Dancers. Chenoa, who has actually been with us the longest, and Mutha (who is also our costume mistress deluxe) are assisting Zyphire. My apprentice is the very multi-talented Astarte, who comes from a diverse dance and ballroom background. It's coming along really well and it's challenging the ladies to step it up...there is no better way to learn an art then to teach it!
I am so proud of my students for their hard work and dedication, it isn't easy to be a belly dancer but it sure can be a fun journey. I have grown as a dancer and teacher and continue to develop my techniques to provide my students the best dance education I can give.
