About Me

JOURNALISTS
100 years of the National Union of Journalists
By Tim Gopsill and Greg Neale
'Journalists' is a comprehensive 384-page history of the NUJ. Published as the union celebrates its centenary.
It tells of the strife and struggles of journalists over the century that saw the mass media become part of everyday life. Powerful media corporations have come to wield increasing power over the way the world is seen and the union is one of the only forces regulating that trend.
The media themselves are the source of much comment, but the stories of those who work in them are rarely heard.
The pioneers who founded the NUJ in 1907 did so to fight for not just their own interests, but also for the public interest in fair, accurate and independent reporting.
This account of their struggles for justice in their workplaces and for the right to report freely and independently, against the backdrop of the tumultuous events of the century, makes compelling reading.
Authors Tim and/or Greg are available to be interviewed or to talk to classes or meetings. Send a message.
How to order
Journalists is published by Profile Books at £17.99, but NUJ members can buy it for £10 from www.nuj.org.uk.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

"A scholarly, comprehensible, readable and very exciting book … it deserves a very wide readership."TONY BENN, former MP

"A century of getting up the toffee-noses of the press barons told in all its grimy glory!"PAUL MASON, BBC Newsnight reporter

"There is a tendency among modern journalists to believe that the NUJ is marginal to the practice of journalism. This book shows how the union has been at the heart of debates - and action - that have helped to preserve and enhance press freedom."ROY GREENSLADE, media commentator, former editor of the Daily Mirror

"A most lively read, putting some real human interest into the unfolding story. Very bright to go for ethical discussion rather than a mere historical narrative." KIM FLETCHER, an NUJ 'refusenik' on the Sunday Times in the Wapping dispute and former editor of the Sunday Telegraph

"My first newspaper job was rendered hellish, and poverty-stricken, by a bullying news editor who told me that, because I was a mere woman, I was 'keeping a good man out of a job'. I joined the NUJ and learned, for the first time, that I had employment rights. The Union has maddened me over the years but I've remained a loyal member ever since." DAME ANN LESLIE, roving correspondent for the Daily Mail
