Walking north over the hills, we were joined by a dog
that wouldn't turn back for twenty or so miles
despite the beating it took from one of the lads.
Feeling bad, we reckoned we'd all stump up for a cab
to take it south when we got to a road, but half-killed
it limped ahead to a house where it happened to live,
which happened as well to be our digs for the night.
So it died quietly under the table as we ate.
