The ARTIST:
From 2000 – 2002, Lamont established himself as a successful songwriter and recording artist as the front man and main creative force for Ten Shekel Shirt. With over 130,000 units sold and a #1 hit - Ocean, Lamont’s music career was off to a great start.
The ABOLITIONIST:
In the fall of 2002, Lamont set aside his music career as his main focus in order to launch Justice for Children International. JFCI works to abolish child slavery and provides care for survivors. (JFCI IS FEATURED IN GQ MAGAZINE EVERY ISSUE THIS YEAR WITH THEIR GENTLEMEN'S FUND.) As Co-Founder and Executive Director, Lamont helped establish JFCI into an effective organization that multiplies safehomes, trains trauma counselors and funds grassroots prevention and advocacy services. Over the years Lamont has become more than a mere spokesperson for a cause; he is a leader and a catalyst in the modern-day abolitionist movement.
The ARTIST/ABOLITIONIST:
After 4 years as the Executive Director, Lamont has relinquished his day to day role at the JFCI headquarters in New Haven, CT and is re-launching his music career. His return to the music scene packs a powerful punch and covers a unique blend of thematic topography.
There are songs of celebration because he has danced with rescued slaves.
There are songs of great pain because he has witnessed young children being sold to sex tourists. He has heard their stories of abuse and captivity first hand.
There are songs of restoration and hope because he has seen the willingness of survivors to partake of a better future.
And there are songs that have nothing to do his work as an abolitionist because no one can dwell on such things for too long. These are some of his best works of art and reveal Lamont’s need to work out his personal and social musings through the medium of song.
Surprisingly, all of these songs, even the darker ones, remain relatable. As Lamont puts it, “not many of us have been enslaved and exploited but all of us long for greater freedom and purpose. I think that’s why those particular songs resonate with most everyone.” Yes, like many other musicians Lamont is able to rock and provide great melodies but what seems to set him apart is the sense of a movement that you feel around him. Many people have already committed their lives to the abolition of slavery and the restoration of exploited children as a result of Lamont’s life and music. And as a result of his invigorated music career many more will.
As a JFCI Board member Lamont continues to network, fundraise and speak on behalf of exploited and abused children. For booking engagements email us at [email protected]
