The Grendels were students at The University Of Western Ontario. They won their college radio station’s 1988/89 Battle Of The Bands, which allowed them to record a few songs for free. They listened to Dinosaur and the Pixies and Sonic Youth and Public Enemy, but for some reason their own music didn’t sound anything like any of those bands. Go figure! They referred to the sound of some of their songs as "Grungy, like the Stooges", but never heard the term "grunge" until a few years later. They also had songs that sounded decidedly ungrungy. (What were they thinking?)They named themselves after a novel by John Gardner, entitled Grendel, which was written from the perspective of Grendel, the "monster", from the Old English tale of Beowulf. Knowledge of the novel is in no way required to appreciate the bloody good music of The Grendels. In 1992 Bill, Asif, and Paul played together again, in Vine.
