What is Urban Renewal?
Urban Renewal is a nu-jazz project that has been on my mind for the last 3 years. It’s a mixture of jazz and club beats (hip-hop, breakbeat, drum and bass, down-tempo, electro, ambient, etc) that is put together on-the-fly! Everything played is totally improvised without preconception. Think of Urban Renewal as a “live remix jazz ensembleâ€.
The idea of using club beats in this manner helps jazz keep pace with a global DJ-driven, electric music culture without sacrificing it’s core institution of interaction between the musicians in the group. My hope is that Urban Renewal will be just that: a renewal of the urban spirit that jazz was spawn from in the great city of New Orleans just a century ago.
