From the remnants of London band Blower, who split in 1987, Martin (guitar/vox) and Alien (drums) formed Eternal Diarrhoea with Lippy (ex-Antisect) on bass. In February 1989, Skinny (ex-DT Warriors) took over bass from Lippy and the band renamed themselves Coitus.
Early songs dealt with such wonderful topics as ‘waking up hungover in public toilets’, ‘lard’, ‘drinking a lot of whiskey and shagging your friends mother’, and generally having no shame. The band’s first gig was a drunken affair in a mate’s shed outside Bath. This gig constituted half of this line-up’s career, as Martin left after just two gigs. Pato replaced Martin and a completely new set was written. The first gig with Pato was at a stripper friend’s birthday bondage party, and the band began to gig around the squats and bars of London.
In March 1991 five tracks were recorded in London. A further five songs were recorded in Dublin whilst the band were in Ireland. All ten tracks were released as the ‘In 2 Minutes You’ll Be Smoking In Hell’ tape.
The band returned to London without Pato, who opted to stay in Ireland. He was replaced by Mik and the rest of 1991 was spent gigging around London and the UK. Some south London squat gigs ended in street battles with the riot police. Another trip to Ireland in February 1992 saw the recording of the ‘Submission/Domination’ cassette.
A two month tour of the Basque Country followed, and a tour of Ireland in December resulted in the recording of the ‘When We Depart…’ cassettes, ‘Darkness On The Streets’ 7†and a split 7†with The Losers (on Fluffy Bunny Records).
A tour of Holland/Germany with The Losers was set up, but after the first gig in Arnham the riot police raided the venue and members from both bands were arrested and received severe beatings from the police. The venue’s solicitor secured their release before they could be deported and the bands limped on to finish the tour.
Irish and Basque tours followed, and an album ‘Failure To Communicate’ was recorded in Dublin for Words of Warning Records. This album was never released, but seven tracks from this session can be found on the Necronomical discography CD.
1994 saw the release of ‘Darkness On The Streets’ on Tribal War Records, another Irish tour and a couple of tours of Europe. The tracks for the ‘Real Cold Fear’ 7†were recorded in August 1995, and the following March Skinny left the band and returned to Ireland.
Keith (ex-Dread Messiah) joined on bass, and the ‘Real Cold Fear’ 7†was released on Inflammable Material Records.
Coitus played in Finsbury Park, London, outside the 1996 Sex Pistols reunion gig. The free show ended when police seized their equipment.
The band then returned to Ireland for another tour and in September the band toured the Basque Country for a third time.
Upon return Coitus decided to call it a day.
Members went on to play with bands such as The Restarts, Coldwar, Paranoid Visions, Zero Tolerance, Stagnation, Screamer and others.
Coitus re-formed to play the "Accross the Decades" festival in England in 2000 and have been sporadically re-forming/wanting to kill each other ever since - Most recently at the Harry Callahan(ex dread Messiah vocalist) Memorial weekend in Dublin 2005.We will return.................................. make
