MARIANE PEARL, journalist, optimist “When beaten down by life, brutality and hate, [she] stood up with love, compassion and grace.†—Angelina Jolie By Susan DominusIn the years since journalist Daniel Pearl was brutally murdered by terrorists, his widow, Mariane, has taken his message—of optimism in the face of horror, of brotherhood with all people—to an ever-widening audience. It is a mission that began in 2003 with her memoir, A Mighty Heart. In 2006 she launched her Global Diary column in Glamour, for which she’s profiling heroic women who bring inspiration to the world. Then came 2007’s film version of A Mighty Heart, starring Angelina Jolie. Critically acclaimed as an “intimate portrait of two remarkable people,†the film highlights the fiery dignity Mariane displayed at the time of Daniel’s death. “The scariest feeling is powerlessness,†she says. “My goal is to point out people who fight that feeling with action and hope. Without hope there is only chaos.â€ALICE WATERS, chef, philanthropist, guru “She’s proving you can change the world one head of lettuce at a time.†—Nora Ephron, author, a 1993 Woman of the Year By Leslie RobargeWhen chef Alice Waters opened her restaurant Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California, in 1971, she wasn’t trying to start a culinary revolution—she just wanted to feed her friends. But chefs and home cooks all over the world adopted her philosophy: Eat local, eat seasonal, eat organic. The result? An organic craze that now extends far beyond Berkeley. “It’s strange when people talk about global warming, and don’t think about how we eat as a factor,†says Waters. (Processing food and transporting it contribute to pollution.) Since the early nineties, partly thanks to her leadership, organic farm acreage has quadrupled. “[Alice] has shown America the promise of organic farming,†says chef Mario Batali. “She has inspired my entire generation of chefs.â€Now Waters, 63, is focused on the next generation. At the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley, children tend and harvest Waters’ “Edible Schoolyard†garden, where they grow their lunch and learn that good food comes from the earth, not a vending machine. A second Schoolyard was launched last year in New Orleans, and, like everything Waters does, the program has grown organically, inspiring chefs like Rachael Ray and Jamie Oliver to start similar projects. “When children eat food together that’s been freshly made, they feel cared for,†Waters says. “Once you feel that—once you taste that—you want it again.â€
