BIO: My name is Tria Turrou. I moved to this area in the summer of 1997 where I slowly gained inspiration and a deeper understanding into art and the art world. I live with my mother and younger sister. I am a full time studio artist living in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I've worked and played with different types of mediums such as; painting, printmaking, glassblowing, drawing, collage, photography, and only until recently have I discovered clay. I really enjoyed these mediums but I found that working with clay allows you to do so much with it. Along with the help of my mother I've been making cups out of porcelain, which are then fired to extremely high temperatures. I've also been making plates which have faces on them, and others that have bunnies and little men on them. The cups that I've been making have these same bunnies and little men on them. At first I made these cups up at Penland just for fun not thinking they would receive any attention, but as I soon found out they turned into something I can make money at. I've worked with several artists most of whom I consider to be inspirational to me and who I've known for quiet a while such as; Lousie Radochonski, Lisa Clauge, Kathy King, Paul Wandless, Jason Walker, Sergi Isupov, Cristina Crodova, and not to mention my own mother, Tzadi Turrou, who is herself an artist and my greatest inspiration. Working with my mom has really taught me the fundamentals of clay and how it works. I haven't really been working with clay for that long I’ve been working in clay for the past few years, I just sort of got into it and started enjoying it the more I got my hands in it. When it comes to the nature of my work I’m really using my imagination, sometimes it's playful and other times it is not. I think what I really enjoy about my work is what I get out of it, and what comes out of the kiln. One of the things I love about working with clay is not just the end result but getting to play and work with it while before it’s been bisqued. When you work with it in this stage you can carve into the clay, paint it with underglazes, and erase if needed. Once you’ve fired your work in the kiln, the whole process of waiting to open it and see what kind of crazy results you’ve gotten is great. It’s like Christmas. Maybe about three or four years ago I took my first workshop, a workshop in Raku up at Wildacres with Sarah House. I’ve taken other workshops here and there mostly in the area of where I live. When I was eighteen I took a figurative clay class with Louise Radochonski at Odyssey in Asheville, Louise was the one who exposed me to wonderful techniques, techniques which I've tried to incorporate into my work today. I have also taken the following classes up at Penland: Photography with Clarissa Sligh, Printmaking with John Scott, and two clay classes one with Paul Wandless and the other with Jason Walker. Two years ago I met and was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work with Lisa Clauge as her studio assistant. Which was life changing as well as an eye opening experience. In 2000, I attended High School at Mountain Heritage in Burnsville, North Carolina, graduating in May of 2002. While still in High School, I showed some of my work in such places like Hendersonville and Asheville. In 2002, I entered three pieces in “The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards of 2002” Receiving a gold key for a painting entitled “Seeing Through Smoke”, along with two silver keys for textile works entitled “Life’s a Punk” and “Walking into the Unknown”. My painting and textile work hung at the Asheville Art Museum. My painting went on to show in Washington D.C. at the “National Scholastics Art Awards Competition”, unfortunately, however, the painting didn’t go any further. In 2004, I entered a painting entitled “A city inside chaos” at the NC Community College Art Exhibition in Raleigh North Carolina. The show included work from community colleges from all over the State. My painting hung in the exhibition for an entire year. I attend Mayland Community College; there I entered several pieces of work into two different shows. I displayed work in Mayland’s 23rd and 24th annual Exhibit/Competition. When I entered the 23rd Exhibit/Competition I didn’t receive any recognition, but when I entered the 24th I received “Best of Show, Student Art” for a painting entitled “Destruction” I also received a Merit Award and special recognition for a painting entitled “Dreaming of Guernica”. In July of 2005, I received a Scholarship to study at Wildacres with the people from Ringling School of Art and Design. In 2006, I participated in the TRAC Studio Tour in my home studio, also in 2006-early 2007 I put work in and am being represented by Crimson Laurel Gallery in Bakersville, North Carolina. Recently in April of 2007, I got work accepted into the Toe River Craft Shop in the Celo area, something I'm proud of.Shows: Hendersonville North Carolina High School Art, 2000 and again in 2001 The Scholastic Art and Writing awards, 2002 group show, High School Mayland Community College Exhibit/Competition, 2004 and then again in 2005 N.C.
