When Tron (aka Frank Smithuis) was created in 1983, only few people believed in the plans of the government, trying to make the first allround Electric Dance Android (E.D.A.). After being placed in an ordinary family in the suburbs of Amsterdam, he was trained to listen to sounds of the Beatles, the Kinks and the Who, groups who tought him the basics of rhythm, beats and harmony. These artists were a huge influence in the still undeveloped brain of the android.
During high school, Tron was told to develop his motory skills in practicing piano. When not having class, Tron got distracted by other musical styles. His titanium brain seemed to show good affection by Jamaican styles of music, like the old Ska sounds of the Skatalites and later, the massive reggae drum and bass combinations made by Sly & Robbie. It was in this period that Tron mastered itself the art of the drums, together with his reggae band, the Bread Cock Specials.
These times now seem far away as we near full completion of the Tron project. In the past three years, Tron was exposed to several kinds of electronic music, like electro, italo and techno. It began with the "living on video" masterpiece of other fellow androids, known as Trans-X. Not surprisingly, this track was made on the same day Tron was created. Having heard these strange italo sounds, Tron found himself a total new world of beats, breaks and bleeps.
Several gigs with famous DJ's and Acts followed, like Mason, Don Diablo, the Subs, Alexander Technique, Joost van Bellen, Vive la Fete, and many others. Also, most of the clubs in Amsterdam, like Paradiso, Melkweg, Studio 80, Winston, Bitterzoet and the Sugar Factory gave Tron the honour to spin music at their turntables. The latest news we heard from unknown sources is that he was asked to be part of the Electronation team. Which is surprisingly, I mean, who needs an fourty-feet high Android to spin music when you can hire a DJ?
