TWO YEARS AGO MY FAMILY CAME TO MAJOR TURNING POINT; WE WENT FROM EARNING $5,000,000 MILLION A YEAR TO NOTHING IN TWO SECOND FLAT. I WAS BROKE. GOD MADE A CHANGE IN MY LIFE FOR THE BEST. I was truly living the American dream; a beautiful wife, three wonderful kids, cars, and a home to die for. We lived Life in the fast lane. We spent money like running water as if it would never stop coming. Eventually it did and we found ourselves in dept for more money than we ever had to begin with. I was in pain it felt like a tornado had ripped through my life. Everyone I turned to for help shunned me away as if I had a decease. All I could think about was how generous I was with people, how I gave to anyone in need simply because I had it, but no one would help me, not one person. I lost everything my wife, house, cars, life style, but the greatest lost of all was myself. I would wake up every morning with tears in my eyes depressed and confused. I just wanted one more chance to do it all over again. I thought life was over.One morning I got up and walked to the grocery store which was about two miles away I had my last $20 dollars in my pocket to get food to eat until I started my new job which was two weeks away. For some reason this particular walk felt so long. I remember there was a big puddle of water in my way and to walk around it. When I got there a woman with two kids in a stroller stood in front of the door the closer I got to her I began to get a weird feeling inside. When I got close enough she said sir my children and I haven’t eaten since yesterday; I don’t want any money if you could please find it in your heart to buy us something to eat. I stopped but couldn’t look her in the face, I told her the truth. I only had $20 bucks to last me two weeks. I said I wish I could help you, but I didn’t have it. I walked though the doors and stopped in my tracks I couldn’t move my heart wouldn’t let me go any further. I turned around and went back to her when I looked into her eyes I saw myself. Like me she was crying out for help hoping someone somewhere would hear her. I took her inside and bought a family size meal. she told me it would have to last them two days until her food stamps would be available.We walked back outside and I said in return could you take a moment to share with me how you got to this point. She said her boyfriend had lost his job of seven years. She had two young kids and could not work. No family support and the bills kept pilling up. She had already received assistance from welfare but it just wasn’t enough plus they wanted them to go to a job program but there was no car so they cut the cash aid. He couldn’t find a job and because of there finances all they did was fight. One day he said he was going to a job interview and never came back. She said on this particular day she received an eviction notice for two month of none payment and on top of it all there was no food in the house. So she walked to the grocery store to steal something for her girls to eat, but couldn’t build up enough nerve to do it. Her last hope was that someone would show her family a little generosity so she throw pride out the window begging everyone that past, but no one would stop or even look her in the face she said I was the first person that even stopped and spoke to her in the two hour she stood at the door.For some reason I asked her what would it take for her to get out of this situation she said a miracle and laughed saying just like the one in my dreams. She said I just want a chance to get myself back together with just enough money get by. I took out a piece of paper and asked her when would she be evicted she said in thirty days or if she went to court maybe 45. I asked her for her name and mailing address then told her I don’t know how I could help you, but I will try.I had enough left to buy a carton milk and a box of cereal then took my long walk home. I couldn’t get her off my mind I got home and sat in my room forgetting even my own problems. I remembered her saying she wanted a miracle just like the miracle in her dreams. For some reason I kept repeating those word in my head. On my dresser sat my phone book I looked at it twice before I picked it up. I flipped though it and counted over 300 people I laughed and went to check my email while checking my email I click on the address book and counted over 3000 mail addresses. I remember saying to myself if each of these people gave her just one dollar toward her dream she would have her miracle.In that instance I got an idea to help her, myself and others who have found themselves in situations like these. Its been said that people are naturally generous but because there are so many predators out there people are afraid to give. So I it called “A Dollar And Your Dream” I sat down and wrote this letter then sent it to every one I know, and ask them to do the same. I wanted people to pledge 1$ per a month to simply help someone else. I then went further to ask them if they had a dream of get out of a situation to write me a letter in response explaining there situation and there dreams. I sent over 100 letters and a thousand emails I didn’t know what to expect, two weeks went by but all I found was more bill. All I could think about was her being put out on the street with those kids.On the third week the door bell rang it was the post lady with the mail she told me it wouldn’t fit in the box; when I looked down she had two boxes of mail I couldn’t believe it I fell to my knees and gave thanks to God. When I opened letters and read them I couldn’t believe so many people were going through the same thing. One letter stood out from a woman in Mississippi Her husband had recently past away and because he owned his own business he never paid into social security or life insurance all she had was her SSI and a teachers pension totaling $600 per month and was in the process of losing there home of 40 year. With her letter She sent a us a check for $60 dollars pledge five year up front in hope that she could be helped or help someone else. Her dream was simply to buy her husband a tombstone and just enough money to move to California where she could live with her daughter and grand children to her saving the house was a lost cause she just need help to move on with her life.There were so many letter and pledges for $1,$12,$48 and as much as $60 dollars. I couldn’t believe it. For the next week I walked three miles to the bank depositing checks, I will remember this moment for the rest of my life. On May 1, 2006 I walked to the bank with a smile on my face all the way there. I ask the teller to make out a cashiers check for $15 thousand dollar to Shauna exactly 44 days from the day I met her, and a $9 thousand to Mrs. Truman and sent them off. That Friday at 2:33pm my phone rang with Shauna on the other end screaming thank you. You saved our lives thank you. She said tomorrow I was moving into a shelter. Thank you I stopped and said remember this day because God gave us a miracle. Later that day Mrs. Truman called and said God bless you for being an honest man and that this moment in her 76 year on this earth confirms that there is hope for mankind after all. The letters never stopped coming.We read every letter that comes to us. It feels so good to not just thinking about myself anymore every month I help people get there lives back. My goal is to answer every letter that comes back with your help. I still can’t believe all we’ve been able to do in one year. God is truly great. As for me I have substituted a life in the pursuit of fame and fortune for a life of serving other people and have never been happier.
