THE OWL was started in February 2004 when the brains behind the famed San Bernardino bands STAND OUT and The Discipline Engine came together determined to undo all the wrong and right that their former projects had done. At the time, guitar master Jesse Ray Sateriale, and drum virtuoso Allen Stell were jamming on a regular basis in their storage unit with a delightfully talented singer by the name of Lester. Sadly, Lester was violently murdered on a train by man named Andy so Allen called up whiz-kid Cody Mcewan and asked if he would be at all interested in filling the vacant vocalist slot. he of course accepted and out of absolute dire need they hired bass master Steve 3 to add a funky fresh groove to their genius tunes.
Several months later a demo entitled "the birth of something wicked... bad ass" was recorded in the bands practice space. the quality was on par with what you would expect using 2 microphones to record the band live in a metal room with shit acoustics but had a character that suited the bands idea’s quite well. it was mildly popular, though the general consensus was "it sure is different from your other bands..." all nay saying aside, THE OWL trudged on! playing shows here and there, mostly to empty rooms and complete idiots disappointed in the lack of circle pit inspiring PUNK RAWK! that they had come to be loved for in their high school years.
In the summer of 2004 the band recorded another cd entitled "Sharp old man, Blunt dollar bill". this cd was slightly different from the metal box demo. maybe because of it being recorded in an actual studio, maybe because it showcases the beginnings of Cody’s decent into madness...the world may never know for sure.
the cd features the bands first attempt at dabbling in instruments other than guitars, bass, and drums. and it was a masterful masterpiece that masters the very art of mastery even though it was never officially released to the public.
A reason why it was never released may be because in September of 2004 Cody descended into a madness so deep and dark that god himself dare not stare into the void for he too might be taken by it’s insanity. In a drug fueled frenzy lasting several days and spanning hundreds of miles of scorching desert, Cody quit the band and by December had recorded a solo record (ala Van Halen) and joined the army to become a machine gunner. The rest of the band trudged on with Jesse singing lead vocals.
In February 2005 the band recorded the cd "Superman was our first president, and he was a glorious patriot". at the same studio that "sharp old man" was recorded. It was a slight departure from the bands other cd’s. featuring what was to be referred to as "clock punk" and "discoviolence" styled rhythms and melodies.
Later in the year, what will be referred to as "the dark times of THE OWL" began. it started when a crowing charleton named Spencer Troy infiltrated THE OWL’s base camp and fashioned cruel mockery’s of their songs in an attempt to lull the band into a deep sleep in order to rob the world of their musical genius. his plan was foiled and he was disposed of in an orderly fashion.
In January of 2006 a battle worn Cody Mcewan contacted THE OWL and negotiations for his return were started.
A small ceramic owl was retrieved by Cody from a cave in the foothills of San Bernardino proving his dedication to the band and they set out to record yet another cd.
The attempt was recording was a complete and utter failure (see blog "god hates the owl"
but never fear. once again, a battle hardened Cody Mcewan returned and in early January 2007 the cd entitled "the death of something shitty... good ass." was recorded and it is a masterful masterpiece deserving of the masters prize of mastering the art of masterful masterfication. the previous nay sayers were no longer saying nay. glorious shouts of "wow i actually like this" and "this is way better than that other shit you did" echoed through the streets and the world was well aware that THE OWL had triumphantly returned and without a doubt was GOING TO FUCKING KILL THEM.
Its flavor, it should be said that the security advantages, we feel translated to prevent the completion of modifications. HEY LOOK AT THE SLIDE SHOW! HOLY SHIT!
