Diver Sisters

We're 4 sisters from Bundoran Co. Donegal,Ireland.We now live in the East village in New York City.We started our musical path by learning classical piano and violin when we were kids(well Angela was supposed to learn violin but she didn't want to go to lessons so Grainne was sent for company....................Grainne now plays guitar!!!!) At the same time we started learning traditional music from our uncle Richard Fitzgerald who along with our uncle Barney and our mom Kathleen had their own really sucessful Ceili band(The Richard Fitzgerald Ceili Band) when they were young.Uncle Richie would come down every Fri. night to teach us jigs,reels,hornpipes, polkas and the like.At the same time our mother sang continuously around the house,she was still recording albums with her brothers so there was always practice sessions in the house.One day our dad came home and said,wouldn't it be great if you could all play a tune together with your mammy(at this stage we were just playing by ourselves) and by the next day we had learnt a couple of mammy songs and so 'The Diver Sisters"musical group was born. We then started playing in the local hotels for tourists from the U.S and Europe,during this time we learned to entertain an audience, something that has stood by us.We learned to play all types of music and toured England ,Scotland and Europe during our school holidays and sometimes during term time which was something that was frowned upon by our teachers at school.As we hit our teenage years the thought of playing Irish music didn't appeal so we started to learn pop and rock songs.The we started to write our own music and decided that the name 'The Diver Sisters' wasn't something we wanted to keep,so we started playing our own music under our new name the 'Screaming Orphans'.That's a story you can read on our Screaming Orphans MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/screamingorphans when I actually put some proper info. about ourselves on there. The reason I'm writing all this is that since moving to the U.S. we have started to really appreciate the type of music we played when we were younger so I decided to dedicate a page to us as an Irish band as it's very much a part of who we are ,so in the future we may start to do gigs as the 'Diver Sisters' which will be mainly Irish as opposed to our Screaming Orphans gigs which will be mainly original music.Well in truth there is no seperating the two sides of us so there will always be some Irish music present at a Screaming Orphans gig and some original at a Diver Sisters gig.This ends our story for the time being.
