The Background & the Buzz:
Brace yourself for a pistol-fast rocket ride known to the world as girlsplayboys. As one of those rare new acts drawing equal praise from fans, critics, and peers alike, this fired-up threesome charges up an emotionally electric sound energized to the hilt having cracked its knuckles on a punk rock block.
The band headed to Los Angeles at the end of 2006 to record their debut album “:from Ritual to Romance” produced and engineered by Gilby Clarke at his studio. The band used Tommy Lee’s (Motley Crue / Rockstar Supernova) drum kit on the album as the recording sessions clashed with Rockstar Supernova’s album rehearsal schedule. Joby Ford - guitarist with L.A punk rock band The Bronx, not only guests on a couple of tracks on the album but also wrote the track “Kill The Lights” exclusively for the band. Canadian artist Heather Hannoura, who is best known for her work with Alkaline Trio, A.F.I., Green Day, My Chemical Romance and Rancid amongst others, hung out with the band during the recording sessions to get a feel for the album artwork she would later design. The album was mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk NY.
“:From Ritual to Romance”, self released on the band’s own Derelict Records is eleven tracks of sophisticated, impassioned punk rock for those not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves. Blistering with energy and exploding with attitude. Girlsplayboys bread and butter is their huge, soaring, Nirvana-esque power riffs entwined with Charles Bukowski-inspired lyrics of decay and addiction, authentic imperfection at its finest. Destined to be one of the most talked about bands in 2007, it’s the enduring melodies, undeniable hooks and killer choruses that make girlsplayboys debut such an a impressive release. A full-length debut so ambitious and assured that it seems the work of a much more established band. From the punishing guitar overdrive of “From Pharmacy To Mortuary” which opens the CD to the southern baptist blues fused ranting of “Kill The Lights” that closes the album.
With all their cannons in place, it’s no wonder they find themselves with huge expectations for their future as an alternative rock band that does things its way. Girlsplayboys hopes to hit full stride in 2007 establishing the band as a national presence. They have defied media conventions by rising up with a balance of commercial-readiness and uncommon street cred born from the clash of bursting talent and do-or-die determination. The band most likely to rise from the clubs and onto bigger stages and TV screens the world over, word is slowly spreading. With several more new songs already honed on the road, Girlsplayboys are wired up, powered on, and ready to detonate.
