Character and plot are more important than special effects. Sci-fi and Fantasy are tops, but are best when used as a setting, not as a story. That said, sometimes I really just like a movie because of an overwhelming visual presence. But, since some people want a bit more than that, here's a random selection of movies I own:
Blade Runner, LotR, Ronin, The Bourne Identity, Dark City, The Dark Crystal, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Equilibrium, L.A. Story, What Dreams May Come, City of Lost Children, An Inconvenient Truth...I think I have a bit over 200 DVD's, so I'm not gonna name them all. ;)
Lost, Carnivale, Deadwood, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, Real Time with Bill Maher. I wouldn't get to watch any of it if it weren't for TiVo!
Robert Heinlein, Clive Barker, Isaac Asimov, Terry Goodkind, George R. R. Martin, Brian Michael Bendis, David Mack, Neil Gaiman, Warren Ellis, and a crapload of others. I love to read.
