Homeland Security Live Alert
I am the daughter of a B-24 Liberator Tail Gunner. My Father lived and breathed, every day, his time during WWII fighting for his Country! He passed away in 2000...I wish he was here to help with this site as he would have love it.
My Father, Robert (Bob) Johnson grew up in the little town of Shamrock in the Panhandle of Texas. My Grandmother had to sign for him to enlist as he was under age. He went to Ft.Hood for Tank Training...but when the chance to fly was offered..his dream came true and he joined the Army Air Corp. The pages of his Mission Log Book tells the rest.
He never got over losing his crew.
He was in the hospital healing from flak injuries....Nov. 11,1944 when his crew was lost.
A young tail-gunner, William D. Fry, took his place at the tail turret. This was Fry's first mission.
Their plane was hit by the lead B-24 moving back into position (after signaling to move out of position) the tail was cut off. All his crew was lost and as far as he was able to find out, none of them were recovered.

The 451st Bomb Group was one of the most highly decorated groups in the 15th Army Air Force. The 451st Bomb Group was also one of the most battered. In 216 missions 135 B-24s were lost.
I will posting more pictures taken during that era...beautiful air photos! I have posted the pages of his log book that describes each mission he was on.
