About Me

Born in 1975 and raised in Lyon, France, Nacim Brahimi started playing the saxophone at the age of eight. After he discovered jazz thanks to his first saxophone teacher, he majored in jazz studies and furthered his musical education at the Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villeurbanne. After he graduated he moved to Paris and continued his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse from 1999 to 2005. There he also learned indian music, ethnomusicology, Alexander method and classical harmony. He naturally was led to write music for many ensembles, of which the Orchestre Symphonique du Conservatoire de Paris, the NNC Symphonic Jazz Orchestra of Groningen (Netherlands) and the Kullabygdens Orchestra (Sweden).He was awarded the first Prize in Jazz and Improvised Musics from the CNSMDP in 2003 and then attended the Jazz Proficiency Course.Nacim Brahimi has toured widely since 1996, performing at major jazz and ethnic music festivals in Europe, Russia, and North Africa with many groups of many kinds : l’Orchestre Jazz Europe Afrique led by François Jeanneau, the Manacuba, Walter Thompson’s Sound Painting ensemble, Albert Mangelsdorff’s Big Band...In the same time he founded his own quartet which has been touring in France since 2002. He now is also taking part in Riccardo Del Fra’s Jazoo Project, which released it’s first album named Roses and Roots in 2005. He has composed soundtracks for La Vie Voyez-Vous... (a film by Arlette Sauvage that was selected for the International Human Rights Film Festival of Paris in 2004), Ma Vie d’Extraterrestre (a one-woman show by Patricia Assouline), les Restos du CÅ“ur TV spots, La Géode, various jingles and institutional films... In june 2004 he won the second best soloist prize and the second best band prize (with Sébastien Jarrousse Sextet) in the National Jazz Competition, Paris La Défense... And a few weeks later, the best band prize in the Allum’ Jazz Competition with La Vie est un Poulpe.Nacim Brahimi was granted a musical sponsorship from the Fondation Société Générale Mécénat Musical in 2004 and 2005, and from the Meyer Foundation from 2001 to 2005.
