Motivated to become a musician after seeing Gene Krupa on Black & White TV at 9 years of age, I developed a strong interest in Jazz. My father played piano so listening to jazz is still a part of my earliest childhood memories. Having only a couple of lessons when I was young, I gained most of my experience from watching and listening to other drummers, and playing live!!
I arrived in Australia in September 1976 to replace Dragon’s previous drummer Neil Storey, who had died from an accidental drug overdose. This was to be the start of a 30 year association with Dragon.
-
1976 – 1979 - My commitment with Dragon lasted right up until the band officially broke up for the first time in December 1979.
1980 - 1981 - During the bands first break I went on to join the original line up of Mondo Rock, but after 3 weeks I decided it wasn’t for me and left.
1982 - Dragon reformed with their most recognised line up of Marc & Todd Hunter, Paul Hewson, Robert Taylor and me. The band needed to pay off some outstanding debts that had accumulated since we disbanded in 1979. The $100,000 debt was repaid in 7 days but the band enjoyed performing together again, playing to capacity crowds, so we decided to continue.
1984 – I decided to leave the band and was replaced by Terry Chambers formerly of XTC. I worked as a session drummer on albums such as "Dark Spaces" by Richard Clapton, "Big City Talk" by Marc Hunter and "Shy Boys Shy Girls" by Kevin Borich Express.
1990 - I moved to Brisbane having tired of the Sydney "rat-race" and studied Jazz drums and piano at the Conservatorium of Music, securing a Diploma in Music (Jazz).
1992 – I toured Germany, Austria and Switzerland with Ian Moss.
2002 – PRESENT DAY – I am now endorsed by ddrum acoustic and electronic drums, Istanbul Cymbals and my own line of Trueline drumsticks. I teach at various schools and still perform live with Renee Geyer, Mondo Rock, Kevin Borich Express and Andy Cowan!!!!!
Inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame alongside his fellow band members from Dragon on 1st July 2008!!!
