Geoff Goddard
Born 19th November,1937 in Reading,Berkshire, England
Died May 15th May,2000 in Reading,Berkshire,England-Aged 62
This page is a Tribute in Memory of Joe Meek's song writing partner and pianist at RGM in 304 Holloway Road,Mr. Geoff Goddard. Yes,Joe Meek was a talent on his own and very well respected but Geoff worked very closely with Joe in the early 1960's as an artist, partner songwriter and pianist at RGM Studios. The fact is that if you hear a paino on an early 60's RGM recording, chances are that it was Geoff Goddard. All Joe Meek fans, please do not feel that I am taking anything away from the Genius of Joe Meek. Many Joe Meek experts cover The Internet and Myspace with their expertise on Joe Meek, that I decided to something more in tribute to the man that worked so closely with Joe in the early 60's and pay tribute to him with this Myspace page. If anyone wants to add any input, please feel free to do so.
GEOFF GODDARD BIOGRAPHY
He started his music career as a chorister at his local church before taking up studies at Royal Academy Of Music in London, where he studied viola and classical piano, the latter at which would become of use to him at RGM Studios, where he would play many of the sessions and develop his songwriting talents with the Legendary Joe Meek.
During his time with RGM/Joe Meek,he wrote songs for John Leyton,Heinz,Mike Berry, Gerry Temple,The Tornados, Kenny Hollywood, The Outlaws, Freddie Starr, Screaming Lord Sutch and many other RGM recording artists at 304 Holloway Road.
He also played piano on many of these productions, most notably on The Tornados song "Telstar",which was the first British Pop song to reach the top of the US charts in 1962=2 1/2 years before the Beatles would do the same.
JOHN LEYTON'S MANAGER,ROBERT STIGWOOD,WAS LOOKING FOR A SONG FOR LEYTON TO SING FOR JOHN'S PERFORMANCE ON THE T.V. SHOW "HARPER'S WEST ONE" ON A FRIDAY. AS IT HAPPENED,GEOFF CALLED JOE THAT SAME DAY TO SEE ABOUT ANY NEWS. JOE TOLD GEOFF ABOUT STIGWOOD'S DILEMMA AND ASKED GEOFF TO COME UP WITH A SONG. THAT WEEKEND,GEOFF WROTE HIS FIRST POP SONG WITH LYRICS FOR JOE MEEK/RGM.
....
THIS IS THE RESULT OF THE SONG HE WROTE CALLED "JOHNNY REMEMBER ME" ON THE TOP RANK LABEL. IT WENT TO #1 UPON ITS RELEASE AND WAS THE FIRST #1 FOR LEYTON AS AN RECORDING STAR,RGM STUDIOS FIRST #1, AND #1 FOR GEOFF AS A STARTING SONGWRITER. NOT BAD FOR A ALL OF THESE FIRSTS!!!!!
