Stephanie Sejour, also known as Tifane, is the present and future of Haitian and Worldly music. Making music her own, she finds influences from great names such as Yole Derose, Yanick Etienne, Emeline Michel, Terry Moise, India Arie, Billie Holiday and the like. Since releasing her self written and composed album, known for its record selling single hit in Haiti, “Se Kom Siâ€, the Diva can be found collaborating with some of the biggest names in Caribbean music and performing world wide. In 2006, she received the “Best Female Artist of the Year†award from Ticket d'Or in Haiti. In the same year she was awarded “Best Female Artist of 2006†by the Haitian Entertainment Awards in New York.
Named “Quiet Influence of the Class of 2003†at her alum, North Central College, Tifane has long left this silent position as her music speaks aloud influencing listeners worldwide. In her first album, Aprent, the listener is taken on a voyage of emotions. Tifane’s diverse use of sounds and rhythms, complemented with poetic words are woven together to make an imprint on the hearts of listener everywhere. Her eclectic rhythms resonate the sounds of the heart, social justice, empowerment and more. Haitian Movie Magazine (November 2007) describes her music as “breathing life into…the homogenous sounds of Haitian musicâ€. The loudest contribution of Tifane is her world-wide influence. For many non-English speaking artists, utilizing ones’ native tongue usually confines him/her to ones country. Tifane, on the other hand has received numerous invitations from both Creole and non Creole speaking events around the world. “J’ai toujours rêvé de chanter en Créole sur une terre étrangère où on ne connait pas vraiment la musique ha?tienne,†says Tifane as she explains her dream performing in Creole in non-Creole speaking countries. This reality has come true and has even been awarded in these countries. In Serbia, Tifane received the “Best Vocalist†award of the Nisville Jazz Festival.
After completing college in the United States, Tifane returned to her home country, Haiti, wanting to pursue not only her singing career, but also utilizing her educational and professional background to empower the youth of Haiti. Recognizing the influential powers music artists hold, Tifane founded KALM a social program mobilizing youth to combat violence. his year, Tifane will serve as a catalyst in the 11th Annual National Haitian Student Conference in Gainesville, Florida, promoting KALM.
While Tifane’s career is still in its infancy, the humble, yet powerful artist/motivator has and is making her mark in the music world. Including the above mentioned awards, Tifane received the “Revelation of the Year†award in 2005 by Ticket Magazine and the “Honor and Merit Award in March 2007 for her contribution to the World Vision’s research project "Discovery Culture" in Hinche, Haiti. In November of 2007, Tifane was invited by promoter Matthew “Mateo†Mulcahy for a homecoming performance in the Old Town School of Folk Music concert series in Chicago. Her Afro-Folk labeled music performance featured the presentation of her entire album for the first time in the United States. Her gratitude goes out to the Haitian community as she determinedly works to win the hearts of music listeners’ world wide. “I would like to say to the Haitian people: when an artist is being appreciated by the people of where they come from, they increase the value of the artist abroad†(translated and cited in tifaneonline).
