Band Members: hey, it's me "bass"ically, but here are some of my buddies:
- clover xpression series xp15.5 custom (5 string)
- fender jazzbass (4 string, mid70s)
- musicman stingray (4 string, mid70s)
- manne custom (6 string)
and some more ...
i also play synthesizer bass. in my opinion there is no alternative to a synth triggered by a midi keyboard when you need really deep bass as in 70s funk, rnb, or hip hop music. just think about those great moog lines played by stevie wonder! i tried anything from stomp boxes to pitch-to-voltage-trigger-hexaphonic-pickup-stuff, but i think that only my synth rig delivers what these styles need.
Influences: well, there were quite a few along my way...
the first records i really learned to play from beginning to end were "warning" and "powerplay" by billy cobham. the bassplayer isn't so well known in germany, his name is baron browne. later on, as i discovered other styles and bands, i studied bassplayers like jonas hellborg, jeff berlin, mark king or flea, but i think my strongest influence until today is john patitucci. his deep knowledge of various musical styles, his ability to play jawdropping solo melodies, fast but intense, and also being a really good sideman is something i try to achieve in my everyday work as well.
it took me some time to discover the obvious influences most bassplayers would pick: jaco pastorius, stanley clarke, or more recent bass greats like victor wooten or richard bona. i also like to listen to bands, whose bassplayers may not be the ones you usually would mention at all. have you ever listended to the beautiful basslines by nick seymour of crowded house, for example?
until today i love to listen to records and try to figure out what the bassplayer is doing rhythmically and harmonically and how it adds to the overall experience of music. there is never an end to this, there is always something new to discover.
Sounds Like: well, very much like me, i hope? check my soundfiles (as soon as they are up)!
