About Me

Formerly known as Tru Ruts Theatre Productions, Freestyle Theatre, was created in 2003 by e.g. bailey + Sha Cage to foster a new style of theatre and help to further the spoken word + hip hop theatre movement in Minnesota. One of the first theatres in Minnesota to present an original spoken word/hip hop theatre production, Freestyle Theatre, in collaboration with Pillsbury House Theatre, premiered Zell Miller III's Evidence of Silence Broken. It followed up with a presentation of Philly theatre collective, Daughters of the Diaspora's, production of Transformers. Next it supported the development and production of LP's Patriot Acts, a project of Pangea World Theatre's Bridges Project. In 2006, Freestyle Theatre participated in the Fringe Festival's presentation of Five Fifths of Casablanca. It is currently developing the work-in-progress, Ruby Dee Ossie Davis, created by e.g. bailey + Sha Cage.
Freestyle Theatre is currenlty working with the Walker Art Center, and supporting organizations and artists, to develop the Twin Cities Hip Hop Theatre Festival. It will also be presenting a play development and reading series entitled, Stage One; along with developing 16 Shades of Brown, an artist of color playwright series + festival.
The Freestyle Theatre Ensemble also creates and produces tailored performances, dealing with a range of topics and issues, for schools, colleges and organizations. They have worked with such entities as African American Men's Project, Hennepin County Foster Care, Anoka College, Dunwoody Institute and others.
