It started with a one night stand. As with most one night stands this one began in a sweaty little bar, hatched by blurry minds, their flirtations sailing on a sea of boozy-breath.
Two duets had played that night. One of those was Boys Republic, whose moody minimalist approach was reminiscent of artists like Morphine, Nick Cave, and Elliott Smith. The other act was comprised of two songwriters, Jordan Mack and Graeme Kennedy, and dealt more in drunken outlaw folk, in the tradition of Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle. It may have been a blessing that no one was there to see either act give performances that were nothing short of genius. The club was completely empty. Still both duets played to impress each other, and impress they did. They were so taken by each others sets that they sat and drank till the early morning and dreamt about doing a tour together, a record together. Between the four men they had played all over North America and Europe, and had made records in world-class studios. The plan was to learn from each others experience, concerning both business and art. If they could be two great duets why couldn’t they be one phenomenal band? By the time they parted ways they had vowed that they would be one band, together forever, all for one, and so forth.
Months later and the drunken promises of that night are still holding strong. After spending months locked in the rehearsal space, writing and recording new material, a new beast emerges: six members, four songwriters, three singers, two sets of influences, one band – till death do us part.
BOYS REPUBLIC : Sometimes good things come from one night stands.
