I'm interested in what you're interested in. I want to know more about what goes on in the world outside of what I do. I do have my own interests, which I would love to share: music (I play and listen), swing dancing (esp. Bal), architecture, art, design, classic movies, trivia, travel (always up for a trip!) and stuff that even I forget. The point is that everyone is not the sum of the categories of a profile. For more on my interests: My Blog: Aimless Idling
Anyone who knows who said "I may be a piano player, but tonight God is in the house" about this guy:Art Tatum, playing "Yesterdays"
Everything (even rap/hip hop, imagine that). If you put my iPod library on shuffle, you'd get some odd juxtapositions. A shuffle possibility: Bulletproof (the Christopher Riley version), Daytona 500 (Wu Tang Clan), Uncontrollable Urge (Devo), Stairway to the Stars (Ella Fitzgerald), Triste (Joao Gilberto), Last Dance (Donna Summer), Smoke Rings (Django Reinhardt), Goldberg Variations (Glenn Gould), Maybe I'm Amazed (Jem), Beautiful (Christina Aguilera), A Forrest (Nouvelle Vague), September Morn' (Neil Diamond)...you get the picture. Currently: my default ringtone is Life on Mars...the radio station I seem to be listening to the most is KUSC (need to destress)...last physical CD I bought was Stephane Grappelli playing Jerome Kern...last 78s I bought were tango ones from the San Telmo flea market in Buenos Aires...last iTunes download was Starlight by Muse...favorite modern solo artist is Fiona Apple (Extraordinary Machine-both versions-is one of the best albums ever!)...favorite duo: the Ditty Bops...favorite swing band: the Bonebrake Syncopators.
I almost don't want to get into this because I made up a list for someone once and it's pretty long. Usually, when someone asks me what my favorite movie is I say "Some Like It Hot"...it's got the perfect mix of comedy and romance; Marilyn, Jack and Tony were never better; I love Billy Wilder; it's set in the 20s; it was shot in 1959, so black and white was an artistic choice; I always wanted to play the ukulele (or anything else) in Sweet Sue and her Society Syncopators band; Park Avenue Fantasy is one of my favorite instrumentals of all time; AND it takes place at the Hotel Del! Plus one of the best last lines ever!:
Jerry/Daphne: Oh, you don't understand, Osgood! Ehhhh... I'm a man. (pulls off his wig in desperation)
Osgood: Well, nobody's perfect.
If a crime is being solved, then I'm usually on board: the CSI and Law & Order families, all of the Agatha Christie stuff on Mystery! on PBS (the Brits really know their stuff). I love House, which is pretty much a medical mystery show with the best anti-hero on TV. The Daily Show, Colbert Report and pretty much anything on Comedy Central (I love to laugh, which somehow is a big surprise to most people). Other shows that make (made) me laugh: The Simpsons, Family Guy and Arrested Development. British comedies: Coupling (mostly before Jeff left for Lesbos) and Ab Fab (before they came back). Oh yeah, I LOVE travel shows, documentaries, the Discovery Channel, Huell Howser and Antiques Roadshow!
Favorite book of all time: Pride and Prejudice (what can I say, it's female wish fulfillment). Besides the very pedestrian choice of Jane Austen, I'm very much into the following writers: Haruki Murakami, Nicholson Baker, Chuck Palahnuik, Edgar Allen Poe (I owe my name to him), Gabriel Garcia Marquez (one day I will be able to read him in Spanish), Patricia Highsmith, Agatha Christie (like candy for my brain). I like quirky, alternative fiction. I like magical realism. I like exploring darkness. And I love a good mystery. Right now, I'm reading my interior design textbook and boy, is it riveting!
Most people I am close to have done something heroic in their lives...whether they were able to weather some serious hard times or just have the courage to be themselves, I love them for it.
