Movies:

i usually fall asleep in them. but..david lynch, star wars (ORIGINAL TRILOGY ONLY!), the entire teen movie genre ("kate, you have exceptionally bad taste in movies" - toby), john hughes, john waters, ed wood, russ meyer, anime - i LOVE hayao miyazaki - (spirited away is my favourite movie ever), bollywood/indian film, any crap parody, waking life, a clockwork orange, reservoir dogs, kevin smith, crap 80s horror, japanese horror, whatever's showing at the mu-meson archives, ..ARIES are better than movies. usually.

Books:

mostly non fiction. physics, mathematics, neurobiology, psychology, ecology/evolution and philosophy are my favourite subjects. if more than one of those appears in the one book i am in nerd heaven. (by the way, this doesn't actually mean i understand what i'm reading half the time)
i also like science fiction. what an enormous shock.
anything obscelecent, biased, out of date or discredited. having spent time in jail for fraud on a matter completely unrelated to his theory that modern religion has it's roots in outer space, erich von daniken is pretty much my hero.
fiction: most anything a miserable looking teenager with a black trenchcoat would have a tattered copy of sticking out of their pocket. albert camus and raymond carver are my favourites. fairy and folk tales - i love a good didactic story especially if it involves talking animals.
street directories, phone books, instruction manuals, the side of packets of food, raw binary data, rude words on upside-down calculator screens, the same sentence over and over and over and over again etc...
here are some blogs and websites i really like:
* nick bostrom's website
* erin of volta sound's amazing laying in bed blog!
* my brother james' live journal ..
* the annals of improbable research

Heroes:

* john w trinkaus . this man is a genius, and i can't see why he never won a nobel prize.
* nick bostrom . just click the damn link! brilliant!
* FM 2030 . not for his work with the UN on the arab israeli conflict (good job there, mate) but for being possibly the BIGGEST nerd ever to walk the earth, leaving legions in his (cryogenically preserved) wake who take neuromancer a bit too seriously. i suspect he also had some role in inspiring the "ZOLTAN!" people in "dude, where's my car".
* peter singer . a wonderful, inspiring man, who amongst other things is pressuring the UN to give apes 'person' status. i can't wait till they get myspace accounts. ..
