Selin Eskandarian was born on June 2, 1982 in Fresno, California to both musical parents. Her father plays guitar, harmonica, and piano, and her mother sings Middle Eastern style. Selin started taking piano lessons in Los Angeles at the age of 6 from a private piano teacher, Mimi. She took private piano lessons for 4 years, then quit when her family lost there house and had to move to Atlanta, Georgia. There, at the age of 12, Selin started learning the violin in her school orchestra. She still kept practicing her piano and learning songs by ear. She started taking an interest in learning Yanni’s music and learned most of his songs on the piano and some on the violin. Selin also loved to sing. She joined a band during high school called Play to Lose. She played violin for them. During her senior year of high school, she was in the choir room singing when the choir director heard her sing. Although she was never in choir, the choir director asked her to sing for her high school graduation baccalaureate at Clovis High School. She sang This Day , and she sang it with another graduate from the choir. After she graduated high school, she decided to join the army. During basic training, Selin attended church on Sundays. She decided to join the church choir and started singing solos at the church. She sang Jesus Loves Me, Our God Is an Awesome God, Till We Meet Again, He Is Wonderful, His Eye Is on the Sparrow, and I Love the Lord Today. While she was in the army, she continued singing at different churches and continued playing the violin since she had brought it with her. She started playing the national anthem on her violin. She also sang the national anthem as well. She sang and played her violin for ceremonies such as change of commands, promotions, and banquets. She continued doing special events in Ft. Drum, NY where she was stationed at until she went over seas to Kosovo in 2001. While she was in Kosovo, she brought her violin with her and played during ceremonies there. She also sang during church and other ceremonies. She also sang for the General with another soldier, Cynthia Pacheco, who has sang with Alicia Keys. Selin and Cynthia sang, I Turn to You by Christina Aguilera. She also won the talent show that they had in Kosovo, as well as in New York. When Selin returned back to New York, she played that national anthem on her violin for one more ceremony, then returned back home to Fresno, California, ending her military contract. When Selin returned home, she started writing music to the piano and violin and added lyrics to her music. She continued writing music until in March of 2005, she joined a hip-hop group called The X-Men. She played the violin for them and sang. During the summer of 2005, she recorded a few tracks with the group and in November, she opened up for the hip-hop singers, Nina Sky. She sang one of her own songs recorded by the group and also danced. Then in March of 2006, she opened up for the hip-hop group, E-40. She also sang one of her own songs, played the violin with her group, and sang their choruses. Selin also joined a band called Gnostic Envy. In that band, she plays the keyboard and the violin. She is also currently in another band in which she plays the violin. Selin also performs as a soloist at many events such as parties, weddings, and at restaurants.
