S :There is one influence that has compelled all artists forth through history no matter their canvas. Whether it be the moment Michelangelo stared rapt at the expanse of the Sistene ceiling or Shakespeare at a virgin leaf of paper, they were influenced by one thing; the yearning to create, the yearning to express their souls' through their art.
This yearning still lingers in the spiritual bowls of many though currently is usually emalgamated with the yearning for money. Luckily for some, this isn't the case.
The first time I came across Robz was what seems like eons ago in highschool.
At the time he had either been blessed with the humility of a saint, followed a code of honour akin to that of by gone nights who only spoke when spoken to. I have my reservations about the conclusion I drew but whatever it was, it definately was not that in years to come he would be an aspiring producer. In blinding contrast to my first meeting with Robz shines the memory of my first meeting with Slo. The end of the school year had finally lugged itself to my door and the Christmas break beconned. Most headed to their families to share the festive season and enjoy the holidays in a merry Santa claus fashion. I headed to Victoria Park to get drunk for 3 weeks. Upon arrival it took mere seconds for a metamorphosised Rob to begin the festivities and it was somewhere in the drunken proceedings that I met Slo. Lying on a couch next to the computer the next day I with a hang over that rendered coherent thought a lunatics' fancy I found out about Slo's hidden talents. They were relayed to me by Rob, the soundtrack: one of Slo's beats.
As pertains to hearing their first works I heard raw and unfunneled talent. The discrepancies lay not in the talent present but in the adheasity of the works. They were much akin to staring at a composite body of lisa rayes' eyes on a face coupled with Jolies' lips, above a torso with Pamela Andersons' silicone enhanced tits, a 'lopez' ass and Beyonce's legs. Each part on it's own was beautiful but as a whole in no convievable way could complement each other. Later on I began to hear a gradual but beautiful gelling of the layers in the sound canvas. This gelling became more and more consistent and more and more apeasing to one's ear. Now it seems whether the beat be a masterpiece or simple sketch they seem to have come into their own. Now they can create uninhibited by the handicaps of drum patterns that do not marry with the melody or melodies that on their own flow but together curdle into a chunky mess.
When asked about their human influences Rob replies quite decisively "Anyone able to make something original". As for specifics they may not agree on every name but they concur on some. 'Timbaland', 'Dr. Dre', 'Scott Storch' are among this list shoulder to shoulder with numerous others.
I remember Robz always had either a Lost Boys, timbaland or a Mr. cheeks album playing while in class.. He's always talked about Mr cheeks from the lost boys saying he's one of the artists he's gonna work with in the future..
Their sound is in most instances eclectic, congas hand in hand with grand pianos and these sitting below an arabic melody are not alien to these two. Whether the world is able to accept their offering or not, one thing is for sure; the spirit of the former greats is ablaze in these two.
