Back in the early 90's, two halves of the band Relik met each other and became close friends. Pete and Nick & Martin and Sean. Nick went to school behind Pete's house in Cold Ash and then later the same school and college. Martin and Sean grew up round the corner from each other in Kidlington and went to the same schools together too.
Fast forward to 2007! Pete's old band Marius had split up and together with the bass player he formed a new band, Relik. A few months down the line, the drummer after appearing on the Charlotte Church Show decided to leave. So Pete put out an advert looking for a new drummer. The only person to reply was Sean Dyer.
Sean had played drums previously in a band called Johnny Mustard. His best mate Martin Fouracre was on the bass. After replying to the advert, Sean and Martin agreed to come down to see Relik doing an acoustic slot at The Snooty Fox in Newbury.
A few days before the gig Relik's bass player quit the band. Pete told Sean of this, who in turn spoke to Martin about it. Previously Relik had played a little battle of the bands and coincidently were up against Nick Strong. So rather than playing on his own, Pete decided to give Nick a ring to see if he'd be interested in playing. They practiced a few songs, but when the gig came, the mic volumes were too low, the guitar amp started squeeling and Pete and Nick eventually walked off after two songs!
At this gig, Sean and Martin amazingly made themselves known to Pete and Nick after what Pete describes as his "worst ever gig"! That night the four of them went out to Bar Cuba and something seemed to click.
After a couple of months rehearsing and writing new songs, the band organised their first gig. It was an acoustic show at The Bedford Bandstand in Balham, London in September 2007. They played Route 666, A Million Friends, Protect Your Hand and Just For You.
Now, many months down the line, Relik have played lots more gigs and have written many more catchy, anthemic songs. Regularly playing around the south of the UK, from London to Reading, Oxford to Cardiff, the performance is growing in strength and the audience in numbers!
With the added advantage of Pete's Dad being the former manager of Stereophonics, it's only a matter of time before this band have a record deal of their own!
Check them out at pub near you, before they get too big!!!
Relik also have an acoustic site for anyone that wants to book us for an acoustic show. To hear what we sound like acoustically, please visit www.myspace.com/relikacousitc.
Most of the favourite songs can be found on this site, but also check out Pete's 'solo' site's for more rough demos, if you're interested. They are - www.myspace.com/petebrandsolo and www.myspace.com/petebrandsolo2.
