About Me

Born in Budapest in 1935, Barles began his music studies at the age of five; at twelve he gave his first recital, while continuing his studies under the direction of Professor Lajos Harnadi, who was himself a pupil of Bela Bartok, at the Liszt Academy, which he left crowned with the highest honors. He also studied under Leo Weiner, Zoltan Koday, Hona Kabos and Marguerite Long. Having already won several international prizes (Bucharest, Warsaw, Brussels) Barles carried off the First Prize at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition of 1957 in Paris and the First Prize at the International Competition at Rio de Janeiro in 1959. In 1958 he won the Liszt Prize -a national award- in Budapest. Barles also excels in chamber music; with the violinist Gyorgy Pauk, he was classed first in the International Competition of the German Broadcasting Companies at Munich in 1957. He has made most successful concert tours in Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Portugal and South America.

Sounds Like: "Barles has given to all his creations the same life, and it is his own life... They are bound together in a unity which determines at once their beauties and their shortcomings; both are consequences of a single order of emotion, of an exclusive way of feeling." - Leslie Brown
