Who am I? Hmmm. I am an actor, singer, songwriter, playwright, children's music teacher, and now entrepreneur. I've been creative as long as I can remember. Creativity is at the core of my spirit, my soul. As long as I am creating, I am fulfilled.My background is theatre. As an actor, I am equally comfortable with comedy and drama. (I currently act in a long-running, interactive play.) I wrote my first play in high school and later won several playwriting awards. I became interested in songwriting as another creative outlet and then began singing. Inspired by the music program I teach in Manhattan and Brooklyn, I recently started writing children's songs.Although I consider myself to be a jazz vocalist, I love all types of music: jazz, the blues, neo soul/alternative R&B, R&B, soul, hip hop, rap, some folk music, latin, soca, reggae, pop, bhangra, showtunes, and some classical. Some favs: Jonathan Butler, Maxwell, Prince, Rachelle Ferrell, Janet Jackson, Phyllis Hyman, Bob Marley, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Jill Scott, Sade, Alicia Keys, Brand New Heavies, Kanye West, and many others.I love singing standards. Although, when I started singing, I really wanted to sing R&B, some wise musicians nudged me--well, pushed me--toward jazz. I'm ever thankful to them--thank you, Jimmy! (I miss you!)Right now I'm working on recording my original children's songs. And my love for showtunes is making a comeback. I eventually plan to produce an independent CD with a jazzy, neo-soul flavor. I'm interested in meeting musicians/composers who love both jazz and neo-soul, other vocalists, instrumentalists, music-lovers, artistic-types, and cool folks.In addition to singing, songwriting, and acting, I recently became an entrepreneur. I also started my own baby line, ALA Baby. I have really cool baby tees and bibs. (For more info re: ALA Baby and my flea market schedule, contact me at [email protected].) An avid inline skater, I'm ecstatic that skating season here! And it's just about time to kayak! I also love movies, dancing, art, books, decorating, the ocean, snorkeling, shopping, clothes, makeup, working out, walking, Central Park, and romance. A long-time vegetarian (mostly vegan), I have a deep interest in holistic health and healing, alternative therapies, and environmental concerns. And, although you can't tell it from this bio, I'm fun-loving and I get a kick out of making kids and adults laugh. :)
