I'd like to meet:

Who is Banksy?

Banksy is a well-known yet pseudo-anonymous English graffiti artist, possibly named Robert Banks. It is believed that Banksy is a native of Yate (near Bristo) who was born in 1974, but there is substantial public uncertainty about his identity and basic personal and biographical details. However, according to Tristan Manco, Banksy "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier engineer, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s." And according to Simon Hattenstone -from Guardian Unlimited- who is one of the very few people to have interviewed him face-to-face. Hattenstone describes him as "a cross of Jimmy Nail and British rapper Mike Skinner" and "a 28 year old male who showed up wearing jeans and a t-shirt with a silver tooth, silver chain, and one silver earring".

Banksy's stencils feature striking and humorous images occasionally combined with slogans. The message is usually anti-war, anti-capitalist, anti-establishment or pro-freedom. Subjects include animals such as monkeys and rats, policemen, soldiers, children and the elderly. He also makes stickers (the Neighborhood Watch subvert) and sculpture (the murdered phonebox), and was responsible for the cover art of Blur's 2003 album Think Tank. Bansky slowly started to get more and more prolific and notable after the millennium.

Banksy has become Britain's most infamous young artist. Originally from Bristol, he has taken his provocative and inspiring brand of vandalism to sites world wide, from the Sydney Opera House to Cuba. A media Favourite for stunts like hanging his own work in the tate gallery, but a popular star long before any of this high-profile activity - simply because the people love his stuff.

Banksy has not only brought UK graphic art to an international audience but has proven, through his emotional and provocative work, that his generation are not the apathetic and unfeeling demographic they are made out to be.

If you live in London, you may have seen his "pieces" around. Banksy is the mysterious figure who made graffiti into fine art.

His paintings have sold for megabucks, yet he often chooses to adorn dingy public spaces with his talent, and a little humour at the same time.

One famous example is his spoof of Pulp Fiction with the 2 main characters holding bananas instead of guns. It was at Old Street station for 5 years, until bosses at Transport for London ordered it to be cleaned off. Now someone less talented with the spraycan has asked for it to be put back.

Xenz!
Xenz painted his first piece in 1987 at the age of 14. He grew up in the North East, which gave a lot of space to experiment with graffiti styles due to its isolation from mainstream popular culture. In 1993 he formed what has become one of the UK’s longest standing and most respected graffiti crews known as the tcf crew / the cities freshest. He has developed a unique approach to the artform experimenting on different media and the word graffiti no longer sufficiently describes his work. His murals are like fantasy dreamscapes and he is known for painting dramatic skyscapes and floating cities depicting the letters of his tag Xenz in a destructed architectural style.
He describes his work as Monet with traffic lights. He has mastered the spraycan and succesfully married fine art with gritty urban scrawl. He works fast and enjoys extremely large scale work. He has collaborated with the best artists in Europe often in the conception of massive murals involving up to 20 artists speaking many languages.
His canvas work explores the subconscious capturing the essence of a summer daydream or even the feeling of walking drunk in the rain at night. He decorates vip areas for the major festivals and events, decorates private interiors and also creates graphics and websites. He lives and works as an artist. He studied textiles and applied arts at Edinburgh College of Art to post graduate level.

D*Face
D*Face is an artist who's work is omnipresent within the cities’ visual environment, using a variety of mediums and techniques he confronts the viewer by creating a form of visual disturbance, that could be seen as a welcomed intermission from the media saturated environment that surrounds us.
Known for his subversive imagery, which involve a family of dysfunctional characters whose roles are to shock as well as entertain, his work challenges orthodox thinking whilst sticking two fingers up at the establishment. His characters, such as ‘D*Dog’ are vehicles for which the viewer questions their relationship with the work, it aims to encourage the public to not just ‘see’ but to look at their surroundings.
Recent collaborations include working with H.R.H Queen Elizabeth on a series of bank notes that where put into circulation for the unsuspecting public to discover in their change and to mark the instatement of Pope Benedict XVI, the Vatican commissioned D*Face to paint a portrait to commemorate this historical moment.

Obey!
Andre the Giant Has a Posse is a street art campaign based on a design by Frank Shepard Fairey created in 1986 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Distributed by the skater community, the Andre stickers began showing up in nearly every big city across the U.S.A.
Later, when Fairey was a student at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), he released his manifesto.
At the time Fairey declared the campaign to be "an experiment in phenomenology." Over time the artwork has been reused in a number of ways and has become a world-wide movement, following in the footsteps of Ivan Stang's Church of the SubGenius and populist World War II icon "Kilroy Was Here".
At the same time, Fairey's work has evolved stylistically and semantically into the OBEY Giant campaign.
LUCY MCLAUCHLAN
born in Birmingham, all she ever wanted to do was draw.
Lucy is so pure of heart they say she can charm the birds from the trees. New art from her (possibly featuring charm, birds and trees) will be coming early summer.

Nick Walker
In 1992 nick began to combine stencils with his freehand work which allowed him to juxtapose almost photographic imagery with the rawness which evolved from conventional graffiti styles.
Stencils introduce an impact element to his work. The appeal of stencils is that they allow him to take an image from anywhere - dissect any part of life - and recreate it on any surface.
He trys to add an element of humor or irony to some paintings to add a little light relief to the walls. Painting is a form of escapism for him and if his work allows the spectator to do the same thing, then hes achieved more than he set out to do.
