About Me

It’s similar to winning the lottery, and recognizing that you were just in the right place at the right time. Nonetheless, hearing the music of Franklyn Currie for the first time leaves you going to bed telling yourself that the day was a success. The singer/songwriter from Abbotsford was a drummer for four years in various bands before he even picked up a guitar. After a few years of teaching himself how to play, Currie began to build a solid fan base in the greater Vancouver area, playing emotion-filled folk songs with a narrative style.“Life gives me emotion for stories and songs,” says Currie. “I like to write stories because I think sometimes people can relate to them easier than they could [to] a poem.” Influenced by artists such as Damien Jurado and Cara Luft, Currie plays folk music in its purest form, with old school country roots and a modern twist. It is his ability to write lyrics that sets him apart from any stereotype you might associate with country music. Songs like “Cold Wind, Cigarettes, and Wine,” “The Question,” and “Lullaby Machine” carry so much mystery that you cannot help but try to find the meaning behind them. This is intentional on Currie’s part.“A mission of mine when I play is to be able to relate to people and experience certain emotions together. A satisfying feeling for me is to have someone come up to me after a show and say that they know that story, or that they have experienced that story. Just to relate to people is the main thing I look for.”Currie comes across as soft spoken and humble in conversation; obviously, his success has not gone to his head. His talent left me, as a listener, amazed that he was not touring all over North America, and actually had time to do an interview with me. Currie is not motivated by gaining widespread recognition, rather, he is driven solely by his passion for making music, and the love he has for sharing that music with the people around him. When asked about his goals for his future as an artist, Currie’s response is quick and simple: “I would love to be in the position where I could regularly play the Canadian festival circuit. One day I would like to tour the States, but I think Canada has a good thing going right now.”Franklyn Currie’s latest release, a five song self titled EP, is being sold at shows in the area, and is worth every penny spent.A.J.
