Dancehallpromotions.com interviews Lion Face Aka Wicked Face,
owner & selector/MC of Killa Face Sound Station:
Where are you from originally?:
Kingston, Jamaica
Is that where you started playing reggae?
I started making tapes in for my classmates while in high school. I myself would listen to King Addies ,Stone Love and Barry G , sounds like that, and I always wanted to build a sound. The first real sound I played on was Jam Rock, then for a while Metro Media. But I considered my first professional experience to be when I started playing with Katarock.
So, how did you go about building Killa Face Sound?
Well, I played with Katarock for six years. I learned a lot about the business during the time. In 2001 is when I branched out to build my own sound. I was living in Milwaukee then, and by 2002 I was playing in Chicago on a regular basis.
Between 2002 and 2004, Killa Face, basically become one of Chicago’s resident sounds .
From 2004 is when I really set out to be a national, international sound and really worked hard to be able to showcase the sound in cities across the country.
We have a website, www.killafacesound.com where people can read more about our history, and also catch some of our audio so they can really hear what type of sound we have built over these last six years. For people who are interested in sound clashes, they can also see on the site what are clash stats are like right now. We have some trophies. 2005 California Club Dread Sound Clash Winners ,2005 Milwaukee Gulf War Winners ,Winners Of 2005 Midwest Rumble ,2007 Dance Or Die Winners In Detroit and Chicago..s 2007 People Choice Sound Of The Year And 2007 Selector Of The year Award
Do you play a lot of out-of-town dates?
In the past year, Killa Face Sound has been on the road about 34 times. We have weekly dates in Chicago ,Milwaukee and Jamaica but since a lot of the dates come in for the weekend, if I am not there for the weekly things, other selectors play the sound.
Does Killa Face Sound has other selectors?
Yes, Candyman has been on the sound for 5 years. He covers the Milwaukee dates. Nambie Killa and my self take care of dates in Chicago and other dates in United States. Freddo Killa (MC) is new to the sound, just came on in November 2006 .so right now he plays in Jamiaca With Dj Mark ,Daffy and Swapy Dread another new selector on the sound , and we plan to have them travel soon.
What does it take for you to prepare for a crowd you’ve never played for?
My music is always arranged to detail, and there’s always a variety of music. When I arrive at the club I observe the crowd and see what the crowd is feeling. Being a professional your box needs to be designed to go into any direction.
What do you when you are not playing reggae?
Most of the time if I’m not actually playing, I’m doing something that has to do with keeping my box updated. I am also a certified surgical technician. So, although the sound is my first love I still have that education and skill too.
Are you accomplishing what you wanted to achieve with Killa Face Sound?
I definitely feel that Killa Face Sound is on a great path. You see, I never wanted to be a ‘deejay’. I always wanted to be a ‘sound system’. I think when you look at how we play, how the crowd responds to us, you know that we are a bonafide sound system
