After years of anticipation, Detroit will finally host its first official Dancehall Queen Competition & Reggae Showcase on Saturday, June 2nd at the Magic Stick, located on 4120 Woodward Ave. This will be one of the biggest reggae shows in Detroit headlining all local talent. The dancehall queen and the competition both came into existence in Jamaica, and evolved into a world recognized event by promoter and entrepreneur, Brian “Big Head†Martin. The International Dancehall Queen competition held every year in Montego Bay, Jamaica, invites young ladies from the Caribbean and around the globe including Canada, Japan, Germany, U.K, Italy and several from the U.S.A. to compete for this title. The winner is declared International Dancehall Queen, awarded cash, and the opportunity to travel and perform. This year, the winner of the Detroit competition will win the opportunity to compete in Jamaica and represent for her hometown, receive cash and prizes, as well as being crowned Detroit Dancehall Queen. Some of Detroit’s best local reggae artists will also be featured, including Anna Lee Billing, Rusty Deyah, Negus Arubis, Phantom, King Jazzy, Sayeed, and Derrick Irie. This line up will be sure to entertain as well as shock those who are unaware of the talented reggae artists that are in Detroit. Also performing live are George Straight, the Real Dancer, and Canadian Dancehall Queen and second runner up in the 2004 International Dancehall Queen Competition, Momo. Three sound systems will be providing the music for this event: Detroit’s own Roots Rock Sound, Killa Face, the Midwest Ruler, and live and direct from Jamaica, Pure Playazz. To kick off the competition and showcase, the Official Pre-Party will be held at Dirty’s Lounge on Friday, June 1st, in Windsor, Canada. One can keep the party going after the queen has been crowned at the Exclusive & Official After Party right across the street at Trenchtown. Those attending the competition will receive a discount on admission by showing their ticket stub. For those unfamiliar with reggae and dancehall, this will be the perfect occasion to come enjoy and learn about the music and dances. For those reggae and dancehall enthusiasts, this is finally the time to see the very best of what Detroit’s reggae/dancehall scene has to offer – guaranteed not to disappoint.
