Echo The Poet MC also known as BlackFace also known
as the Cure was born on September 3rd in the city of
Seattle, Washington. At the age of three he was
uprooted to Cleveland, Ohio where his love affair with
Hip-Hop and poetry would blossom. Music was always a
dominant presence in his household. He became drenched
within his mother’s taste of Motown, 70’s soul and R&B
records as well as his father’s preference of
Beatle’s, classic rock, folk and pop music. He was
introduced to Hip-Hop in the early eighties by way of
Afrika Bambaata blasting through his cousin’s boom
box. He began writing poetry alongside his rhymes at
the age of 12, which had amounted to 200 compositions
by the time he was 14. By the 7th grade, he had formed
his first rap group which at the time was heavily
influenced by legendary rap acts such as Run DMC, Big
Daddy Kane and Eric B and Rakim.
Echo honed his lyrical skills by freestyling with his peers
during junior andsenior high school. He regularly participated in
school talent shows, neighborhood festivals and local
rap competitions usually coming out on top. He began
recording demos at the age of 16 with various local
DJ’s and producers. He usually composed his poetry
quietly while it served as therapy for his teenage
years. It was during this time that he began to view
Hip-Hop and poetry as a way out of his meager
beginnings.
In 1998, he recorded his first full-length project
entitled “The Genesis†alongside local producer, DJ
Eclypse. They performed at various local venues such
as The Grog Shop, Peabody’s Down Under, The Humidor
and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an opening act
for Outkast. It was also at this time that he became a
member of the spoken-word poetry collective NUSE (Nu
Urban Soul Essentials). He was heavily influenced by
spoken-word icon, Saul Williams by way of the movie
“Slamâ€. This was the first time that Echo had viewed
the dynamic of poetry as an outlet to perform. He
began to perform at regional open-mic spots as well as
release several chapbooks at the time. It only took a
year before Echo was considered a force to be reckoned
with in the poetry scene of northeast Ohio. He
disbanded with DJ Eclypse in 2000 having recorded over
50 tracks in their time together. It was also around
this time that he departed from NUSE desiring to
progress his artform. After parting amicably with
Eclypse and NUSE, Echo decided that it was time to
shop his demo as well as his completed manuscripts of
poetry. In the summer of 2001, Echo became very close
to signing a recording deal with Rawkus Records solely
based off of "voicemail auditions". Unfortunately the
label folded before he would go over any type of
contract. In the several years to follow, he would open up for such Hip-Hop luminaries as Chuck D of Public Enemy as well as Outkast.
Another close call presented itself in the form of DefPoetry Jam. In the winter of 2005, Echo had survived the final cut of auditions, being at that time the only poet from Cleveland to have ever been scheduled to perform on the show. It was only a mere week later when he discovered that his slot, due to a demand for more celebrity guests, would be instead taken up by Black Thought of The Roots. This would only be another setback to fuel his drive. Within the last 4 years, Echo has enlisted
the production services of such local heavyweights as
Dubflex, Ace Boogie and Preview. In the spring of
2006, Echo relocated to the cultural mecca of Atlanta,
Georgia with his fiance to further realize his dream
as an MC and poet. He is currently recording tracks
for his upcoming full-length Hip-Hop project entitled “Evolver†for the purpose of shopping for a deal as well
as completing a manuscript of short stories and poetry
entitled, "Love Is A Verb".
Echo’s music and poetry deals
with universal themes as being inspired from his own
life. His style mixes old-school braggadocios with new
school bohemia, giving him a unique sound that many
have compared to the likes of Mos Def, Saul Williams,
Outkast and A Tribe Called Quest.

Sing If You Know The Words (Dedicated to my Soulmate) Ramah S. Church 4.26.04
We swing low like sweet chariots
As if we've carried us
Moved us and grooved us
Into a new us
Once He married us...
Meshed us into His nexus
Until the Devil was scared of us
Man...we got Lucifer runnin'!
Since we're truthfully stunnin'
Beautiful and glorious
Usually victorious
And although we may stumble...here and there
We're aware that the fear is where..
Where God is scarce
Gardens where roses grow without a face
Without a color or scent
And so our Love is spent....
Like a tax return in March
Like shirts needing starch....
Carrying a wrinkle or 2
Despite the flaws that we own
We're seeing it through
Until being with you is renewed
Divine and destined
Refined and breathless
Sublime and restless
Paralyzed under your power.....until we're helpless
Until we're frozen from our picture framed
Visuals to be depicted within our childrens' names
Carryin' on...
When we can't go on
Sharing our songs
Until y'all sing along
