Carsten Hein (Weilburg 1979) plays bass in different musical settings. After learning the piano early on, he discovered the electric bass at the age of 14 and began to play and sing in punk and reggae bands. At 21 he moved to the Netherlands to study jazz and popular music at the ARTEZ conservatory in Arnhem.
During his time in the Netherlands he won several jazz-prizes with the band „Zo Knarr“ (Young Jazz Award Tübingen 2003, New Jazz Prize Dordrecht 2003) and as a soloist (Jugend Jazzt in Hessen 2002). Important teachers were touch guitar virtuoso Kuno Wagner and bassists André Nendza, Pieter Douma, Charles Nagtzaam, Henk Haverhoek.
Concerts and tours with jazz-, latin-, and popbands lead him through Germany, the Netherlands, Morocco, Poland, Belgium, France, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Spain.
Since 2002 he has been exploring new sounds by using electronic effects, loop samplers and preparations with his electric bass. These sounds can be heard in his duo-project with Sax/Flute/Clarinet player Hannes Kies and on projects with the Amsterdam based Theater group Polly Maggoo, which combine their unique theater language with improvised music. Currently he is also playing bass for popstar Martin Jondo as member of the reggae/soul/hip-hop backing band The Ruffcats.
Carsten Hein lives in Berlin. Besides his musical activities, he has completed a Master’s degree in „Arts- and Media Administration“ at the „Freie Universität Berlin“ in 2008 .
