Zappa meets Sun Ra meets Boulez. Where rock, world, jazz and new/improvised music meet. Don't miss international powerhouse electric guitarist, composer and improviser Fred Frith, who has played with Brian Eno, John Zorn’s Naked City, Ikue Mori, Tom Cora, Zeena Parkins, and on recordings from The Residents and René Lussier to Amy Denio.
Fred is here to perform in three distinctive concerts with Halifax’s Upstream musicians and visiting-artists, drummer Pierre Tanguay (Montreal) and bass and circuitry wizard Lisle Ellis (NYC). At the festival Opening Reception he will perform solo and as a guest with bassist Lukas’s Pearse’s Live Animal sampling trio w/ drummer Doug Cameron and pianist Tim Crofts and with the Ellis/Tanguay/Cram ETC Trio. At Friday’s Encounters concert we will hear composer Frith’s Freedom in Fragments performed by Halifax Sax (Oore, Mitchell, Hatfield and Cram) and guitarist Frith in trios with Ellis and Tanguay and NS guitarist Daniel Heikalo and Tanguay as well as a new septet by Upstream Artistic Director Paul Cram. Saturday’s Orchestral Manoeuvres will feature the 17-piece Upstream Orchestra performing compositions by Frith, Ellis and Halifax’s own Jeff Reilly.
The Sonic Courage International Festival offers the listening public a sizzling sonic atmosphere where sparks fly and musical solutions ferment.
