Born and raised in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, Anthony Toner released his debut album, ‘Eventually’, in 2002. Recorded at Clive Culbertson’s No Sweat studios in Coleraine, the album featured some hot studio players, veterans of Van Morrison, Ronan Keating and Mary Black tours and bands, and the album picked up steady airplay and some great reviews from radio pundits. Anthony is now working on album number two. The songs are some of the strongest he’s ever written, and the hope is that the album will be recorded during the spring, with an eye to an autumn launch. He's a steadily working musician, a guitarist and singer with various bands who play all kinds of music, from the country-rock of New Moon to the blues/swing of Yap Yap Yap. He is also a member of the Neil Young tribute band Heart of Gold, which was a hit with audiences across Ireland on its recent tour. He has also recently performed as a member of the Ronnie Greer blues band, on slide guitar and vocals, and was a part of the band for their recent appearances with acclaimed songwriter Whitey Johnson. Anthony also performs as a solo artist, and has appeared as support act for, among others, John Renbourn, Brian Kennedy, Niamh Kavanagh, Juliet Turner, Bert Jansch, Colin Reid and Frances Black.

Playing the blues at No Alibis

I'm one of the world's most enthusiastic browsers, so the thought of playing a gig in a bookshop seemed like my idea of Musician Heaven. Playing the blues and scanning the shelves at the same time? Wh...

Grooving with Whitey Johnson

By the time I post this, the great Whitey Johnson will be winging his way back to the USA on a big white jet, sipping white rum and reading, er... White Noise by Don De Lillo, perhaps. What a treat is...

Free at last

Just back from a gig at the Corner Bar in Limavady, almost without realising that it was my last ever gig in a smoke-filled environment. I've been playing in bars since I was in my mid-20s, and have b...

All hail Bill Withers

I was driving home last night listening to Bill Withers's Greatest Hits and it struck me again what a wonderful artist he is - he radiates strength and integrity and mellow wisdom. He is the Morgan Fr...

Bye Bye Uncle Kurt

The death of Kurt Vonnegut makes the world seems a smaller and greyer place, somehow. He was one of my hugest literary heroes, and re-entered my life last year just when I needed him. I had read ...

Stringing the bass

I faced an unusual task at the weekend, during my rota Saturday at Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart, where I work. The centre has for years owned an old double bass, donated in the dusty recesse...

On the slide

So, I had a memorable Saturday night gig as my debut with the Ronnie Greer Blues Band - what a treat it turned out to be. I've been an admirer of Ronnie's playing for some time, and have always been i...
