ABOUT THE FILM
The short film (15 minutes) "23", written, directed & produced by Alex Konyves (long before the Jim Carrey film titled "The Number 23" hit the theatres!) is a fimmaker's exploration into how 23 became an important & significant number in his life. Aside from being born on the 23rd, and sharing his birthday with his parent's wedding anniversary, there were many instances in Alex's life where 23 held special meaning. His father, celebrated Vancouver video producer and poet Tom Konyves has a set of 23 haikus titled, aptly, 23, which was inspired by how the number has played such an interesting role in his own life regarding dates, times, and so on. This was followed by Alex's writing of the script "23" to be directed by him & filmed on 16 mm which was such a treat for all involved in the proccess as so much is done on digital video these days.
"23" has been playing the film fest circut in Canada, and has thus far ganered a few nods & rewards including the "Audience Choice Award at the Vancouver Student Film Festival" & "Official Selection at the Montreal World Film Festival".
THE STORY
Ethan Stockton's (Jeff Child) life is drastically altered when he awakes to find himself paralyzed. After a brief visit from the doctor (Barry Mickelson), he is given a book of facts about the number 23. He is soon joined by the strange yet playful Leonard Magnum ( T.Paul Ste. Marie ), who leaves no doubt in Ethan’s mind about the power of this number and the prophecy the book foretells.
As the film progresses, we follow Ethan & Leonard on strange adventure after adventure (imaginary & in Ethan's mind, or real?) unfolding the non-coincidences of 23 in life, science, phisics, and so on. Each new fantasy scene sees Magnum in approproiate costume & character for the scenarios that follow, from his "Wild One" like look on the great and almost disaterous bed risde down the streets, to his ultra-cool beatnik cat delivering an almost poetical rant about the power of 23 in relation to sex & chromosomes and so on.
We follow the sometimes comedic, often intense personal trip that Leonard takes Ethan on through to the movie's conclusion, something which you can only witness for yourself!
