About Me

Founded in 2000 by pianist and composer Simon Keegan-Phipps, the skp jazz co-operative has changed in size and shape to become one of the most respected function jazz bands in the North East. With a repertoire that finds the perfect balance of jazz standards and new compositions, the band’s virtuosity, enthusiasm and wry sense of humour have made them a popular choice for both background music and as a concert act. In June 2006 the band enjoyed a rapturous reception at Wakefield Jazz Club, and they are currently in the process of recording their first album.

Simon Keegan-Phipps (piano) – the band’s founder and musical director – is a much-sought-after session musician, with a finger in almost every musical pie in the area and influences ranging from Northumbrian folk to New York swing. His inventive style, instinctive technique and flair for composition have earned him a growing reputation as a must-have jazz commodity of the North East, whether as a solo artist, or with his jazz co-operative.

Richard Lister (saxophone) was raised in Yorkshire on a strict diet of bread, water and jazz. A former Musical Director of Durham University Big Band (2005-2006), Richard is an award winning saxophonist and has been part of the skp jazz co-operative since 2004.

Chris Prior (bass) has been performing regularly – on both bass guitar and double bass – in and around the North East of England ever since he first started at Durham University in 1999. He has played alongside SKP ever since the very earliest incarnations of the present band.

Cornelius Mueller (guitar) has musical interests and influences covering a range of styles. He has been playing with the co-operative for a year now and, despite only having come to England from southern Germany two years ago, he is already making a name for himself as a formidable contender on the jazz guitar scene.

Mark Stormont (percussion), whilst experienced in working with larger bands, thrives on the musical freedom offered by a close group. Mark’s the newest member of the group, having joined in October 2006, but he’s already a vital part of the co-operative’s furniture.

Alex Taroghion (trumpet) is a London-born musician now studying at Durham University. Citing Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro as among his main influences, Alex, a former student at the Guildhall School of Music, has performed with the London Community Gospel Choir, Jazz Jamaica and as musical director of the Durham University Big Band.
Influences: Gerry Mulligan; Fats Navarro; George Shearing; John Blacking; Alan Merriam; Dextor Gordon; John Storey; Lumpy and the Discharge Kid; Alistair Anderson; The High Level Ranters; Ceilidhography; Hazel Winter; Adrian Utley's Theramin; Horseplay; The Iron Men and Severn Gilders; Norman Holmes; BBC World Service; Verity Sharp; Peter Edwards' Wurlitzer rendtitions of George Formby classics; George Formby; and much, much more...
