About Me

I like writing music...______________________________________________NOW PLAYING:THINKING ABOUT YOU (AUGUST 2007) - Had a tough time getting the bass right on this... The balance between bass and drums is a delicate one, as is seems they are always fighting for space in the mix. Honestly, I haven't done the "car check" on this one yet, so it still might not be exactly what I'm looking for, but it's definitely close. Once I rewrote the "lost" bassline for this, I throughly enjoyed making it... I wanted to make this one groove, without the drums completely owning the song--but more of an accent to the inherent movement of it. I didn't really want them to pop--outside of bringing the hat hard at the end of the song (about 2:18 on). I needed it because I kept the beat loose there... I wanted the "people in the circle watching the disco competition" vibe there, if you can use that mental picture. It was frustrating but fun...I finished composing with a sense of accomplishment...Then I hear songs by other producers and realize that I have so much more work to do to get where I want to be as a songwriter... KALAMAZOO (January-February 2007) – Started this one on a snowy winter day in Michigan… The old lady with the fire-engine red dyed do was bumpin’ the 700 Club or something like it through the paper thin walls and I couldn’t take it anymore, so I put on the headphones and started to write. It’d originally called it “Betty” but it didn’t work as the music started coming to together. I’d been listening to a lot of Blue Six (thanks--V. Boyd) that week so I think that came through somehow. It started with the Rhodes, Sax, and strings... The bassline on this one fell into place and I was happy with it for about 3 days—then I thought “I’ll add a little bit to it.” I ruined it. Listened to it for about a week and went back to the simpler one. I tend to mess things up when I listen to them too much--don’t know if I get bored with it or what…but sometimes it’s hard to figure out where to go. You know you need to do something, but it’s not always immediately clear. I finished this version you hear in Oklahoma along with Fight and Sue (see below) and really shat on the bass drum and clap here… another listening binge, I guess. I doubt a needle would stay on this record for more than 20 seconds…but I couldn’t hear it at the time. I’d been in a hotel room with headphones on for about 3 days straight during a pretty bad winter/ice storm. I drummed it up, spat out the piano melody and worked with the various filters a bit…done.FARGO TO FRANKFURT (Winter 2005) – My first…A Stewart Walker inspired trip to Frankfurt… I think I have all the methods of transportation covered here…A BETTER PLACE (DECEMBER 2007) - A promise kept... Rough edit. Possibly a little heavy on the cheese, but it makes me move--and that's what matters... Still need to work out the drums on this one, there's a few out of place--and I'm not 100% convinced on the snare in the first 8 bars.. I'll think about it, fix & repost when I get back to the States. See you all soon!ALEX ZELENKA - DESCENDANT (MARQUIS GREENE REMIX) ALEX ZELENKA - DESCENDANT (ORIGINAL MIX)"Problems..." I've JUST finished a remix for Alex Zelenka's "Descendant" originally intended for a Chicago label, Prosthetic Pressings (008).. Well, I ran into all kinds of problems with this one. Initially, I couldn't figure out exactly what I wanted to do with the synth line or the bass...my beat wasn't crackin' , etc... When the mix finally started coming together in the studio I left for Germany & Japan unfortunately my Logic XSKey (see: Apple's worst idea ever) was still in the USB port in Georgia, USA. ...meanwhile the other remixes (Lee Curtiss and Adam Stolz) were finished and released about two weeks ago...So, posted on my site is my remix that unfortunately didn't get in in time to make the release... Yeah, it's like the last guy finishing the marathon...I've also posted the original song by Alex Zelenka on my page. Enjoy...Also check out the Lee Curtiss and Adam Stolz Remixes at Prosthetic Pressings (the ones that actually made the release) if you get a chance. They are very nice.FIGHT AND SUE (February 2007) – Restless days in Oklahoma. I pumped this one out in two nights (11-12.02.07) on my laptop with my terrible headphones. It wasn’t until I got back to a proper studio that I realized how lacking the sound was. I missed all of the hiss, and most of the treble in this one, but at the time it sounded pretty fat and clean—surprise! Super thin on proper speakers. I like the energy, nonetheless, so I keep it around. I’m convinced that my laptop has the worst soundcard known to man, seriously… I sampled various speeches from Mr. Bush himself for the sound bites…uh, yeah.______________________________________________ Marquis Greene presents: PROPER TECHNO mixed 11.03.07 1.
