"Luca Crescenzi constructs his portraits from a distance and covers different decades, choosing subjects whose look is almost invariably mask-like and layers the ghostly outline of the impressions such a volatile appearance leaves on the memory of their admirers.
The portraits are constructed by graphically suggesting a selection of the different visages different artists have presented over the years. In so doing, he fixes an overall impression of these painters, singers and actors there where their appearance is misleading to more general understanding.
The investigation is directed to the meaning which is given to an image. It is doubtless that all images are purposely chosen. The portraits thus become an investigation directed more towards the portrayer than the portrayed. They render the mirroring effect which art, music and film possess which is ultimately reflected in the so-called image of the performers.
These portraits are simultaneously charged with personal investment and a will to scrutinize. They study as much the beheld as the beholder and summarize both within one image which becomes the representation of memory, personal meaning and the passing of time."
