The only thing I remember is that, it was the fall of 2003 and I had smoked way too much Marijuana and had eaten way too much Taco Bravo. After I dropped by Our local arena to off a pair of Mariah Carey Tix My company paid for Me to go review (You want Me to review what??? Hahahahah!) I then headed to south first street to shoot a little pool at My favorite little tweeker filled bistro and much to My surprise, it was a band showcase night going under the name of, “The white trash hoe-downâ€!!! That particular night was interesting because I had visited this club before and it was emptier than a baseball field in the winter. This time the place was packed to the walls and smelled like beer with a sweat chaser. Once in a while a Chick would come by to take a drink order dressed like Ellie Mae Clampett (Later in the evening she was one of the Mud Wrestling Girls!) The audience was packed like a sardine can full of tuna and a lot of people had come to see a country-thrash band aptly named, â€The Wiggle Wagons†but, it was the opening band that blew Me away. They were hard to see and were totally obscure if it were not for the fact that you would catch a flash the heavy sunglasses that hid the singer’s eyes from time to time. They were a great band as I recall, but that singer. His voice was like some kind of emotional earthquake shuddering from the stage preparing to take on the whole world- a blend of some kind of Neil Young meets Elvis Costello if they had a baby with Tracy Chapman and Graham Parker spitting out a sort of John Mellencamp/ Creature from the black lagoon thing with an acoustic guitar and a songwriting attitude and angst I have not seen since, oh , maybe the old punk rock days of yesteryear. These guys were a fresh kick in My ass and woke Me right the hell up out of My smoke induced stupor and I thanked Jesus almighty God above because They grabbed My soul and shook it senseless. It was Kenny Thomas and The Southern Baptists. And I at that moment had truly seen the light…and now I retire to my home to watch “Sanford and Son†with my four foot bong. 2004 Dick Izinia Grit Magazine
