There’s something about Isa Alfonso’s voluminous voice that speaks of wisdom beyond her young years. The poetic Cuban troubadour put in a lot of practice as a backup vocalist for cats like folk-rocker Roberto Poveda before she mustered up the courage to go sola. It was worth the wait. Now, with a few major performances at events such as the Women’s Festival and a brand-spanking-new-PhD in Cuban literature under her belt, Isa’s got all the elements she needs to make audiences swoon with her soulful crooning of the heart and mind. Catch her regular Casa Panza gig while you can, since this Cuban brainchild heads north to New York to teach university in the fall.
