The Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps is a 58 year old, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We were founded in 1947 by the Hilton Fire Department. Through a desire to provide a musical unit for their men to march behind, and at the same time realizing the problems of keeping young people occupied, the Hilton Fire Department organized the "Hilton Fire Department Drum and Bugle Corps". In 1964 a merger took place and the Crusaders became the Grey Knight Post Crusaders. In 1966, the Crusaders were inserted into the Congressional record. Later that fall, the corps received an Outstanding Sportsmanship award from Congress, the first ever given to a drum and bugle corps. In 1979 the members became the owner of the Corps calling themselves once again the Crusaders.
Who We Are
The Rochester Crusaders are a all ages drum and bugle corps based in Rochester, New York. We have been in existence for over 50 years, and are one of the most respected corps in the activity. The 2003 season was our 56th consecutive year of marching and musical excellence.
We are a not-for-profit musical, visual and educational organization providing quality instruction with a focus on a musical and visual program that is both artistically and technically innovative and challenging. While we maintain a total committment to excellence, we do not lose sight of our primary reason for being - to have fun.
Who Can Join.
The Crusaders is open to anyone - high school age and up. Any brass player, percussionist, weapon or silk performer who has the time, enthusiasm and energy to commit to a demanding schedule with one of the greatest drum and bugle corps of all time, is welcome. Most members have some prior musical or performing experience with a high school or college marching band, a junior or senior drum and bugle corps, winter guard, dance troupe or other ensemble. While past experience is not a prerequisite, potential new members will need to demonstrate sufficient skills in their area in order to be accepted as a member..
For those who like to work behind the scenes, additions to our support staff are always welcome. A strong desire to be part of the Crusader family and a willingness to work when, and as needed, are all that this position requires!.
Rochester Crusaders host Brass Clinic with Jim Prime.
The Rochester Crusaders will be hosting a Brass Clinic with Mr. Jim Prime Jr. on Saturday, January 6th from 1pm to 9pm and on Sunday, January 7th from 9am to 3pm at Hope Hall, 1612 Buffalo Rd. Rochester, New York.
Mr. Jim Prime Jr. is member of the DCI Hall of Fame and has dedicated his life to drum corps. An accomplished teacher, Prime is respected for his unending concern for the kids. According to Thom Hannum, "Prime's students and colleagues have nothing but the highest regard, not only for his musical talent, but his personal integrity. "Jimmer" (as he is called by his friends) is kind, thoughtful and humble qualities which endear him to any individual he encounters."
As a brass arranger, Prime landed his first job with the Black Diamond Regiment and eventually moved on to the Crossmen, Bridgemen, Garfield Cadets, Blast, Boston Crusaders and Star of Indiana. Says Dennis DeLucia, "If the artistic growth of drum corps in the '70s can be defined in part by the brass arrangements of DCI Hall of Famers Jim Ott, Wayne Downey and Jim Wren, then the drum corps sounds of the '80s and '90s are defined by the creative brilliance of Jim Prime, Jr."
Come experience the brilliance that is Jim Prime.
This clinic is also a rehearsal for our corps therefore we will be going over marching techniques also. Our percussion will also be rehearsing both days along with our color guard on Sunday. We welcome anyone who is interested in participating in this weekends camp. Dinner will be served on Saturday and Lunch on Sunday and will cost $3 for the whole weekend. That is the only cost to all who attend. If you're interested in attending, please contact our recruiting coordinator at [email protected] or myself at [email protected]
