Our History:
Finn McCool's FC was born out of a drunken discussion in Finn McCool's bar in Banks Street, Mid-City, New Orleans one Saturday in January 2005.
Whose initial idea it was to form a football team ("soccer" for our colonial cousins in the Land of the Free) is a matter of heated debate, claim and counter-claim.
We will probably never know for sure, but what is certain is that present at this inebriated conversation was Adrian Simpson, a motor-mouth Scouse ice-cream man, Paul Medhurst, a rotund Londoner banker, Big Bird Rab Nelson, a Scottish ship designer, Dave the Rave Ashton, the world's oldest teenager tragically trapped inside a 47-year-old's body, and Bad Penny Kenny Farrell, manager of the New Orleans Shell Shockers.
The following weekend an inaugural kick-around took place and soon a team was formed. Taking our name from the greatest bar on earth we played our historic first game on April 16 2005, and despite having our illustrious leader Captain Marvel Medhurst sent off "early doors" we managed a battling 2-2 draw.
Three weeks later we stormed to our first victory in a 4-0 win with leading club marksman, pocket-rocket striker Billy Whizz Dwyer, making his debut and getting on the score sheet for the first time. Over the next three months we played three further friendlies: Winning one, drawing one and losing one.
We had been training for eight months and were ready to enter the Southeastern Louisiana Adult Soccer Association to play our first competitive match when just 13 days before the season kicked-off Hurricane Katrina roared ashore. When the storm slammed the city our team was scattered across the States and around the world. The bar was drowned under six foot of water. Finn's players, club members and supporters lost possessions, jobs and homes.
But just five weeks after the costliest natural disaster ever to hit America our side resumed training and within months the team was reborn. In March 2006, 14 months after the first kick-about, we finally got to join the league and finished second in the second division. We won promotion to the top flight and in division one we finished third and reached the cup final, losing just once in our last 11 league and cup games.
Our squad is made up of drunkards from four different continents and despite our early-morning Sunday starts we are often cheered on by loyal fans, friends and supporters. The story of our birth, death and rejuvenation has been featured in newspapers, magazines and on websites around the world and we are even the subject of a forthcoming book.
