MONTUNO VIBES
Montuno Vibes came to life 5 years ago after DJ Henk from Ghent released “Angel†on Statra Records from New York and was subsequently invited to go play there to promote the record. His sets caught the eye of many New Yorkers and they decided to put up a link between Ghent (Belgium) & New York (USA).
Re-invitations in legendary clubs as Bak-tun in New York, led to introduce the American colleagues to Belgium and started the Montuno Vibes concept in Club Geluk, Antwerp.
The next edition of Montuno Vibes was organised in Ghent, Henk’s home-town, where they were offered an exquisite location in the Old Crypts of the Sint-Pieters-abbey, a unique location which radiated a true underground feeling.
From there on all future editions of Montuno Vibes were held in extra-ordinary locations as the Crypts of former Cirque Central; the ‘The Old Arena’, a monument built by the same architect of the Opera and St. Anne’s Church; also the Swimming pool Van Eyck in Ghent (Belgium’s oldest swimming-pool); later on Theatre Minnemeers; the Café & Compagnie; the Cocteau; the Galveston and also the Skyhall of Brussels’ airport in Zaventem.
DJ Henk also returned to New York for a second and third tour of 4 dates while he worked in the studio on a follow up of the Statra Release. He also teamed up with Cisco Ferreira from The Advent for a release on Alpha Records: G Flame vs. Henk present "Camio Project".
Shortly after Montuno Vibes flew to New York for a full blown event in the famous Sullivan Room, 50 fans and lots of press joined them on the party-flights from Connections where Montuno Vibes presented the first double compilation cd. There he met Natascha Smetryns who’s now running the Montuno’s bar but is also responsible for the management of the Montuno Vibes events.
