I started taking pictures while i was in a band called The Quireboys, or here in the States The London Quireboys. We were on our dizzy ride which lasted a bit longer than the regulation 15 minutes, but we were traveling and meeting people and i wanted to record it. After that i ended up in L.A and joined a banded called Nancy Boy with a guy called Donovan Leitch,on a whim we all relocated to New York City, well a whole world of expierences opened up and there was plenty to take pictures of.I took some pictures that were used on the inner sleeve of Nancy Boys first major release and i wrote a few articles and took pictures for the now imfamous Cheap Date magazine, shot Evan Dando and The Dandy Warhols for European C.D single covers and genrally just got around a bit.The year 2000 brought me back to L.A for the reunited Quireboys. And this is were i call home. I have an old school aporach to shooting bands,or musicians ( the Subject i feel closest too)i prefer just to let them be rather than forcing anything so i can capture the real person, sometimes it works with fantastic results, but there are a few subjects that need a prod!!!or a prop......usually a beer will sort anyone out. I, like most people saw my first pictures of bands in the music press, which for me was Sounds, a weekly newspaper in the U.K, and then of course those great dogeared 12" vinyl records, albumns like Slayed? by Slade, a cover by Gered Mankowitz, or Black and Blue by The Rolling Stones by Hiro. The Sounds photographer Jill Furmanovsky even the rudest photographer in the world yes you know him, Mr Ross Halfin ( Sounds and then Kerrang) all documented all i love about Rock'n'Roll photography. But by far someone like Micheal Coopers photo's of The Stones in the 60s or Annie Leibovitz's "The Rolling Stones on tour" book in the 70s are the kind of pictures which belong to long gone age when a photographer had unlimited accsess to bands to follow them around, go drinking, drugging,on tour in the studio unhindered by managers and labels and that god awful press person ( who breeds these people??!!!) Well those are the kind of photos i want to take, anyone interested ???????????????????????????????????????????????? Cheers for listening and looking, Nigel Mogg
